To draw a parallel to fixed wing flying. It's a very much like someone saying that they got an Airhogs toy RC plane, got bored with it, and from that brief experience of a cheap RC toy plane they concluded that all RC plane flying is boring. |

Take away the self-leveling and it's a whole different world.
My first CP was a HK250GT, donated by Balr14. If you get bored with one of those, you are truly an exceptional individual. ______________________________ To put things into perspective, I donated some of my V911 fleet to an 11-12 year old boy (estimated) that lived downstairs and was stuck in the middle of a nasty divorce. My Flysky FS-T6 was programmed for other birds at the time, but since I had purchased better transmitters there was no reason to keep it, especially since it could bind to the V911. Since I was working lots of hours, I informed the youngster that he needed to do his own research and that he would have to do some reading to set up the FS-T6 to fly the V911. I explained that I would help him if he needed it, but I could not do it right away due to time constraints. He was flying it the next day. |

I started out on quads a few months ago and now want to also fly helis. Is there anything decent I can start out on in the $100 price range? I could spend a little more. I just don't want anything that feels lke a cheap toy. I also have a Flysky fst6 tx. I fly a little fpv with quads but my favorite thing is flying los and doing tricks. I've always wanted to fly a heli.

The best flying one you can buy new for $100 would be a Blade Nano CPS. HK recently came out witht he Assault 100. It's a 2S job that's a good size for the backyard and it's about $100. I don't how good or bad it is, but the price is good and it looks nice, similar to an mCPX BL. There's also the Hisky HCP80 and HCP100 you can look into. People seem to like those quite a bit.
Personally in the micro class, I fly a Nano CPX and an mCPX BL. I think Blade makes the best micros. The Blade stuff is a lot more expensive but their products work reliably well and have good customer support. I have some bigger helis too (Align), but those are my go to micro helis when I just want to fly out front and save the drive to the airfield. I'm not familiar with the radio you have, but if it can take modules for the various protocols you'd be okay for HK and Blade. Hisky uses their own protocol so with a Hisky heli you would have to get a Hisky radio. There are no radio modules readily available for Hisky as far as I know. Though there might be so you'd have to look into it. In terms of moving from your quad to a heli, it's not a big jump if you are used to flying your quad in rate mode as opposed to stability mode. Newer helis do offer stability modes, but rate mode is the traditional way to fly a CP heli. In any case, you'll have a lot of fun with it regardless of what you decide on. CP helis are exciting to fly. Oh, looked on the Hisky web site, looks like the HCP100S can do DSMX with an add-on so that might be a help in terms of the radio; http://www.hiskyhobby.com/productinfo.php?id=598 |

Yes you can use any reviever you like in a bigger heli. Though in a micro they typically use a "3 in 1" board that comprises the receiver, controller, and ESCs in one unit. There's no option there. You have to use the transmitter the heli's board was designed for. Though there are some work-arounds. HobbyKing uses an add-on module that plugs into the trainer port on some radios. Other heli makers offer add-on receiver modules to provide compatibility with other radio makes. There's also the option of a more flexible radio. The Walkera Devo radios offer Deviation software that provides compatibility with many heli makers. Though only certain Devo models can take the Deviation software so you have to check.

Quads are easy to fly (some pretty much fly themselves) , they make for great stable camera platforms, many are relatively inexpensive, and thus they appeal to the masses. You can buy a quad and be up in the air taking pictures and videos in no time. No wonder they caught on like wildfire.
Traditional helicopters are more complicated, require more patience and more practice to learn to master, require more tinkering, etc. Most people don't have the patience for that. The only quads I have ever owned were tiny Cheerson CX-10 nano-drones. They are a cinch to fly and amazingly handle themselves quite well outdoors even in light wind TThat said I still prefer much flying traditional helis. In fact I recently had the opportunity to purchase a larger quad with camera and all but I opted to buy a CP heli instead. I am sure there are many others like myself who prefer flying heli's. We are just a smaller group than the quad flyers. |

i guess quad flyers are in it for what you can do with the quad platform, where as heli flyers are in it for the enjoyment of flight.
helicopters are my preference. little quads did make me a better heli flyer though. |

I have a little quad and I like flying it. Though I fly it in rate mode where it handles more like a Heli. Thing is, newer helis have the same self-leveling flight modes available as multis so the argument that they're easier to fly is getting watered down. In any case I agree, people fly helis to fly where people fly multis more as a platform for video. I'm not much into video or photography so helis are it for me.

I fly WK Ladybird V1/ Scorpion Y-6. both still fly after years of use. My biggest quad is WK Hoten-X bl. all need to be flown.
Helis are what i wanted to do from the start. Almost four years now. March 1 2012. Co-ax / then 4 ch f/p/ 4ch FBL/ Micro c/p's then 250 c/p's/ then 450's/ soon 500's. Quads are hot FPV/GPS/ Vids etc. Boring stuff to say the least. Racing big deal. My goal was the 450 size. Fly them and be in comford zone. Both fly-bared and FBL. Goal is reached and going beyond that. Soon fly a fly-bared Blade 500 D new in box. Lader get a FBL bird like Gaui X-4. I have gone into other RC flying but helis will still be part of the Hobby. The good heli birds will survive the quad mania. A two year old can fly a quad. Helis are not hot ticket but far from down and out. So enjoy those helis they Rock. |

Some guys are using V911 boards that have two servos mounted to it to fly small planes. I may try an ultra lite using one myself. Range may be problem but i have T9X. RX have no idea. I have two fbl units one for 200 size the other 450. The 450 has long antena booster. 7ch and might work in bigger bird.
