Wattage Mig-15: CBP 650mAh and 16/7/7

Here's the results of a Wattage Mig-15 combined with a Mega 16/7/7 and a 10-cell pack of Cheap Battery Packs' 650mAh 2/3AA cells. (same as KAN 650's)

http://meteor.rchomepage.com/mig-15-jul04.wmv

This set-up will drop the AUW by about 3oz., and offer more RPM due to the conversion to brushless vs. the stock Speed 400. (but, the actual power to the motor is slightly -less- than the stock set-up!)

The video starts with a landing, to show the low-speed characteristics, and it was also the first time I launched it myself. (we didn't have another body for a "tosser", and a cameraman!)

The dip upon launch is -not- caused by lack of power, I simply didn't get on the stick quite quick enough!

Normally, it will climb away with no initial altitude loss.

Fun, and very cheap!

Kool Video

What ESC did you used the CC P10 or the P25???

and also What kind of flight time can you get with this battery pack????

Thanx

Cc 25...

Oddly enough, I tried a Castle Creations Phoenix 10, but it seemed that there is too much resistance in the ESC and/or wire to allow the motor to reach the same RPM as the CC 25.

It was very weird; I sold my TMM 18 controller, and installed a CC 10, but there was not quite enough power to allow the plane to fly, it simply settled into the ground in about 50 feet (or less)

I swapped it out for the CC 25 and it flew exactly as you saw above, which was also the way it flew with the TMM 18.

The HOC load on the batteries/ESC is a bit over 10A, so there's a chance that the CC 10 just can't handle it, but the controller never shut down, or showed any other weird effects.

Sometime, I may do a bench-test with these two controllers to see if wiring and/or resisatnce is the issue.

Oh yeah, the flight time is almost 4 minutes, going flat-out. (you really can't throttle back too much with most EDF's!)

Thats really cool! Heck might be fun to add 2 more cells and come in at a bit under 1 1/2 oz below stock but with almosr the same power as the 3T combo. I'm sure the 7T could handle the 14 to 15 or so amp load and the 150 something watts or so would be fun!

Diminishing returns...

Well, those little 2/3AA's are really capped out at 10A, and right HOC they are almost at 11A, so you wouldn't gain much by adding two cells.

On 12 cells at 14A-16A, the voltage would depress quite badly, and you really would get a proportional power gain for the weight penalty.

If you want more power (with the same weight), you'd be better off with a hotter wind and an 7/8-cell pack of the new GP 1100's, which can handle 20A+

I have yet to test it, but the 16/7/6 might be a good 7-cell combo. (the 16/7/5 might be a bit too hot a wind)

I'll be testing a Razor 2500 and 7-cell KAN 950's in the Mig soon! (almost the same power level as in the video)

will any cheaper Himax motors work with this Mig???? I was reading something about the himaxx 2025-4200 working good up to 200watts......but I think the ampdrawn will be too much for these batteries right???

sorry, but I'm just starting to get in EDF. that's why all the questions

Himax...

Dunno about the Himax motors, but the price difference is marginal...

From what I heard, Himax motors are lower-efficiency clones of the Hacker B20 series.

There also might be an issue with the Himax motors not having enough torque to turn the 64mm rotor efficiently. (for example, the Hacker B20S can't handle the load)

didint know the 650's were that touchy at those loads, your right then there would be no gain.

I use a Himax 2025-4200 in the stock fan unit with a P25 and 3S2P Etec pack for a total of 2400 Mah AUW is aorund 19.5 ounces.

The motor draws 19 amps simple math makes that 210 watts but its probably more like 190 watts.

The plane takes off in around 50-60 feet from asphalt using the stock landing gear and appears to be doing 70-80 mph (at least thats what my hotliner flying buddies think)

So far engine temps are around 110 degrees after 4 min flights and batts are just warm, been putting about 1000 MAH back in so should be able to do 8 mins full throttle no problem.

Can say enough good things about the Himax 4200 I started with a 3200 on a 3 cell Kokam then tried a 4 cell Kokam but both those setups lacked good vertical and the ability to do multiple loops was not there, once I change to the 4200 with the twin etec packs it became a much more fun plane to fly.... For those of you who have never flown these things on asphalt (with curbs!) it will definatly give a larger pucker factor

Meteor,

I was looking at the Mega 16/7/7 specs and it gives 21,000rpm at 9 amps with 8 cells. It further shows the 16/15/2 at 40,000 rpm and lists it as a ducted fan replacement, but drawing 35 amps. Think this could be run using a 3s2p Lipo?

16/15/2 in a Mig!

Well, the Mig and F-86 are really just park-flyer 'planes...

You'd need a rotor replacement to run the 16/15/2, and the power draw would probably exceed 35A at 10V (3S Li-po).

That's simply too much power for this little foamy!

If you want more power than what's in the video, try a 16/7/6 or /5 and a 3S1P 1800/2200 Li-Po pack, but be careful not to exceed the motor's max amps (15A for the /6, 16A for the /5)

Good luck!
