I keep looking at the picture of Jberg's IRRX....it looks amazingly easy to put together.....is this true or am i just being wishful? I'm really interested in trying to put a system of my own together but i'm apprehensive especially in the areas of programming my own pic....is there anybody out there willing to make/sell me a simple two channel RX(rudder,throttle) and a TX or buddy box?

yes, the ir rx is quite cheap and easy to build, compared to an rf rx. This was in fact the main reason (besides lightness, of course) why I started to deal with infrared stuff. Remember, the rx itself mostly consists of the sensors and one PIC processor (if you use 200 Ohm actuator coils).

Slightly off-topic but what are the amps that we can use to drive lower resistance coils? PICs can only sink very low current and it is nice to be able to use DWE's 50 ohm coils with these IR receivers.

Any digikey or Mouser part numbers? What are we looking for, FET bridge chips?

Vilas,
I'm using a dual single supply opamp made by
Analog Devices part number AD8532 it works down to
2.7 volts and will supply or sink 250ma,
8 lead soic package Allied or Newark electronics
no external parts required.

Thanks Joe, this is very helpful. Now I could also add the op-amp to my Ztron IR receivers and use lower resistance actuators.

3ch version


I have completed to build 3 channel version which Koichi published.
I used 2 HS-50 servos and ESC to the unit.
Number of TX's LED are 55 and RX's photo IC are only 2.
I tryed it in the one basketball court size gym today.
There were no problems to fly.
This unit can use magnet actuator drivers instead of servos.
This 3ch receiver was welcomed by our team. There are 3 guys who already build this unit and some guys in Japan are waiting for the electronic parts now.
I believe Koichi's IR units might be a nice solution for builders of indoor/micro planes.

koichi tx-rx code info


I download from koichi'site tx and rx schemes and hex files for futaba. Could someone give me schemes and hex files for Hitech Tx or tell me how to modify koichi's one? Thanx!

Koichi,

The 8532 is a dual opamp

tie pins 1 & 2 together, this is output to one
side of actuator coil.

tie pins 6 & 7 together, this is output to the
other side of actuator coil.

pin 3 input, connected to 12c509 pins 2 & 3

pin 5 input, connected to 12c509 pin 6 & 7

pin 4 neg supply (-)

pin 4 pos supply (+) does not need 5 volts from dc-dc converter connect to battery supply will
operate directly from battery 2.7 to 6 volts.

the ad8534 is a quad version if you if you need
a second channel.

I understand very well by your explanation.

I received MAX4016 of MAXIM instead of AD8532. Pin assignment is the same although there is little output current as 120mA.

The tested result is reported anew.

Several people have inquired about using Hitec
transmitters instead of Futaba with Koichi's
infrared system i've compaired the channel assignments between the two.

Futaba channel 1 thottle
channel 2 elevator
channel 3 aileron

Hitec channel 1 aileron
channel 2 elevator
channel 3 throttle

As you can see they are not the same, Koichi's
code for the 12c509 is written for the Futaba
it will not function when used with Hitec.
Having said this if you still want to experiment
with IR you can visit his web site and check his
latest post it shows a decoder for use with servos
you can move the output connections around for
Hitec. This post has the hex codes along
with a drawing.

Could you use a pic to make an rf reciever?
If so anyone know where to find info on how
to do it and the info about the transmiters
that needs to be decoded?

PICs are used in RFFS, Skyhooks and Berg rcvrs (and probably others as well). They are used to decode the signal after it has been through all the RF circuitry. The advantage is that some digital filtering is possible.
