Wattage F-22 with mixed surfaces & 208 watts/lb!! (video)


Here's a really effective modification of the Wattage F-22 using "linked" surfaces a-la the Wattage F-86.


This mod makes for much more roll authority (speed) and removes the noticeable axial-roll "wallow" that the fully-flying stabs had. (the nose tended to follow a small circle in a roll)

Also, the stock set-up always had some slop in the linkages to the stabs, so this would mean that it was always hunting a little in roll, as the surfaces twitched with varying aerodynamic loads. This set-up is rock-solid


Other benefits are substantial weight savings from the tail by removing all the useless linkages and servo mounts, as well as moving the servos closer to the CG, making balancing easier. (or to add a larger motor!)


This model uses a Mega 16/15/4, APC 6x5.5 and a 3S1P 2600mAh Poly-Quest pack.

It pulls about 27A static (270W!), and the AUW is a hair over 20 oz.


This ship gives new meaning to "vertical" performance! (you can punch it from a near-stall, and it will accelerate vertically 'till it's a dot!)

awesome vertical performance and rolling rate.

few questions:

1/ can the 2600 fit in the F22 cockpit? (spelling)
2/ I doubt those two tinny servos will stand the torque on both 4 control surface for very long?
3/ are those control horns from GWS?

Yup, the 3S 2600 Li-Po easily fits under the canopy by cutting a slightly deeper (3/4") channel in the existing battery bay.


I think a lot of people overestimate how much torque is actually applied by aerodynamic forces...

These "normal" hinged surfaces will load the servo far less than the stock arrangement of a fully-flying stab, and don't forget that the Wattage manual suggests CS-10 (GWS Pico) servos for the flying stabs!

We intentionally used very thin music wire to allow a little bit of flex under extreme load situations. (sort of a "servo-saver" effect) Also, music wire is hardened so it'll flex and bounce back without permanently bending.


Yes, the aileron horns are stock GWS horns, and the elevator horns are Robart "hinge-points", kind of overkill, but it's all we had!



All in all, very successful.

Awesome plane and Video Meteor! I have one of these sitting in the closet waiting to be built. I got an astroflight 020 direct drive system in trade and thought this would be the perfect plane for it. I may have to bump it up a notch or two on the priority list after watching the video.

I just pulled my very similar set up off the line (after 323 wonderful flights) and am converting it into a semi-scale F-35 with a single 65mm fan (Wattage housing probably with a Kyosho rotor cut down).

I was flying 3s with a 5T though at about 180W on a 6.5x6.5. Mine would not quite go unlimited veritcal and wasn't as fast. I decided to go EDF with the new batteries coming out though.

Awesome plane Meteor.

I need to get another one of these airframes though before they disappear. I paid $22 for mine used as a Christmas present 18 months ago. Needless to say it was far and away the best bang for the buck I've ever gotten in 15 years of RC flight.

Worthwhile modifications I'd say,interested in the prop size too, might give it a go over the 6 X 4 APC prop in my mini Cat,which has a pretty much identical power train to yours, except my AUW is 35 oz..

20 oz, it's got to be a winner, and it shows in the video!

I just buy them by the parts now. I have a template for the wings that came from my Wattage Mirage(same wings) so I just buy the bodies and make my own surfaces.

Folks;

It sounds like Wattage again is pulling the plug on the F 22? Is it true?
Gosh... what the hell are we going to?
First, they killed their mirage 2000 (one of the best pusher jets out there)
Now, they are pulling the plug on the F 22
I am confused? Are we supposed to fly Slowsticks, Piper Cubs only???
If it is true then This world is becoming very weird???

This test was done with Polyquest 10C batteries, I would like to put some new 12C to 16C into this and "prop up". Over 310 to 410 Watts should really make her "Scoot"
