Savoia SM-55X prototype build
After a lot of brainstorming, what type of flying boat/ seaplane next to build, I asked Allen Mrock of Classic Aero http://www.classicaero.com/main.html
if he would send me a set of plans for his brand new Savoia-Marchetti SM 55X. He didnt not only that, he also sent me a set of vacuformed parts, helping building the two hulls. The plane has a wingspan of 58", and an AUW of around 3,5-4 pound. |

first step was planning the wing with all ribs; I drawed them in corel draw, then miled them with my cnc-mill.

Now I´m building the wing center section. I plan to separate the outer wing panels outside the hulls for easier transportation.
The aluminium pieces onto the top spar are desired for mounting the Motor-N-struts. Because they are under the top decking on strong spruce spars, I think they will withstand a less than perfect landing If anybody has a question, or can give me a tip, please feel free. Kuni |

Any update today.
I built in the carbon rod holders in the center section and added the last spars. |

In this pic you can see how I plan to attach the outer wing panels to the middle section.
Next I will build the outer sections. Kuni |

One of the coolest subjects I've seen since Don Srull built his electric Dornier DO-X!
I'll be watching this one... Glenn |

Hi folks, time for an update.
I was a bit busy the last days. I searched an motor for the S-55. Finaly I built one for myself! It is a 6-pole/9coil inrunner with 2:1 gear. It turns a 10x8 Cam with 7740 rpm at 20amps from 10 fresh charged nicads. |

Oh, I forgot: the motor has a similar size to a speed 400 and weights with gear 4,88 oz.
Today I built the first outer wing panel. Everything fits fine, so I make good progress. Also the carbon plug, it is easy to attach and has automaticly the right angle with the milled ply-tongues. Here some pics: |

Here two shots of the torsion pin I built in today;
it is from 4mm carbon tube and 5mm brass tube. Do you think it will be strong enough? Or should I insert a steel pin into the carbon tube pin? Kuni |

Hi,
added the wing sheeting today. I made a d-tube box from the nose to the main spar. Also built in 5 deg. washout (recommended by Allen Mrock). Next will be cap-striping. Kuni |

Looking good Kuni..............very detailed. There will be lots of strength in that wing.
Is that motor going to be powerfull enough? Saw your fair city on the TV tonight.........dedicated new coupola for the Church. I was in Dresden last September, and thought how lovely a city it is! Ian |

Interesting and unusual airplane. I like to see more unusual looking airplanes. I hope to see it finished.

Hi Ian,
yes, Dresden is wonderful. I dont know if my Motor has enough power. Allen recommends a geared Astro 020 with a 10x7 prop at 10 cells or 3 lipos. I dont know exactly the gearbox of the motor, so I cant run it at Motocalc. My Motor has 2:1 gearbox, and turns a 10x8 at10 fresh 2/3 sub c nicads with 7740 rpm at 20 amps. But I have a actro C-6 in spare, and if nothing helps, I build an LRK with similar dates for the second drive. Because of the inline arrangement there will be no problem with different motors. I have also two axi 2808/16 flying in my Catalina; I could use them also. Can you give me some advice how to make a hatch in an vacuformed part? The nose to wing upper hull area is vacuformed. I have to slide the accus full forward. And I want them detachable for other models. I am playing with different ideas, but nothing seems good enough. Kuni |
