FMS 1400mm F3A OLYMPUS PNP

Just put in the order for this plane, I have a few other pattern type planes that I really like, did not see any place to put this thread so if you fly this post up any info and tips and how it flys , I will follow later after a few test flights.

Ok folks I finished the assembly of the Olympus,, packing was great no damage to anything, the directions are spot on and a lot better then even ones from say great planes, during assembly follow the instructions with the parts bags marked and its a breeze finding the wright screws ,control rods ect ect , this thing even comes with a screw driver for all the screws and even some glue for the rudder hinges, I put larger tires on the plane tho,and left off the wheels pants and the spinner, I just don't like these items , I want to do some watt test with 5 and 6 cells packs but that's later, the Olympus balanced out with a 3300 6 cell with the pack about 1/4 forward the battery tray and closer to the 160 mm mark, also added Velcro on the battery tray. wont get a chance to maiden it till next week with weather and work tho.

Have you flown it yet?

I have one on order so I am interested in your experiences.

You may also want to check out the posts on RCU where others have discussed props and 5S versus 6S batteries. A few are recommending 15" x 10" props with 5S batteries. I would like to hear from anyone who has tried 16" lower pitch props.

Test Flights

My Olympus went flying this morning. Following the suggestions on the RC Universe forum my first flight was with a 4000 6S battery and the stock 15x8 prop. No problems or issues other than my pounding heart!

Second flight was with a 4000 5S battery and a 15x10 prop. Again no problems or issues. I like the plane.

I think I agree with others that the 5S battery and the 15x10 prop is a little better combination. I am only trying to fly the basic F3A Sportsman routine. It doesn't have the challenging vertical sequences of the advanced F3A routine so either the the 6S with the 15x8 prop or the 5S with the 15x10 should be satisfactory. My batteries are older 20C ones. They worked fine. I only have 1 of each and that limited me to 2 flights. I am planning to buy new 5S 4000 35C or perhaps 4500 35C for longer flight times.

Dave

After looking at available batteries I changed my mind and ordered Hobby King 6S 4000 25-50C Nanotech batteries. These should give longer flight times than 5S and if I am not happy with the vertical performance with the 15 x 8 prop I will try a 16 x 8 prop. Those flying with 15 x 10 props report more top speed than desirable. Also 6S means lower currents and that should lead to higher motor efficiency.

I am flying with 6 cells, 3300 mah, I did prop down to a 14x7 APC. Almost 1500 Watts with the stock 15X8 prop and 6 cells was to much for me, still fly's very well.

I am curious about your flight times with the 3300 batteries. On my test flights I ran my 4000s down below 50%. I want the capability of 8 - 10 minute flights. What are you getting with your 3300s?

4 flights yesterday. With my new 4000 6S 25C batteries I can fly the F3A Sportsman sequence twice and still have about 50% left in the batteries. So easily 8 minutes. I moved the C of G back from 150mm to 155mm. I like it better at 155 because that got rid of a bit of up elevator trim.

I purchased my Olympus airplane near te end of April and finished assembled it recently. I have found that the fuselage is twisted so that the horizontal stab and the wings are not parallel and the tail is also bent the same direction like the horizontal stab. Does anyone else have this problem?

The stab on my Olympus was not quite parallel to the wing. I tried to shim the mounting piece for the stab and got it better, pretty close now. There appears to be a very slight twist in the fin (I didn't notice it but one of the other guys did) that required a few clicks of rudder trim. After 13 flights I am very happy with the way my plane flies.

My biggest complaint is that the dark blue on the bottom of the fuse and the red on the bottom of the wing makes it appear very dark and somewhat difficult for me to see the plane's orientation. It helped me to add some white paint to the bottom of the main wing and the small upper wing. Next I am going to try some white on the bottom of the fuse.

I am over 20 flights now. CofG back a couple of more mm to about 157 to 158. Extended rudder servo arm to get more rudder throw for stall turns. Also programmed a throttle curve to help me get it slowed down for landings: 14% throttle at 25% stick, 39% at 50 and 72% at 75. Helps.
