MWC FPV Wing Kit - Paris v5r3 autoPilot OSD GPS RTH - CarbonBird 1111kv motor
Recently I have been given the opportunity to build up a wing incorporating the paris v5r3 board fom multiwiicopter.com that offers RTH via the patrick E wing code and osd that runs the multiwiiosd firmware. There are plenty of guides out there on building this kind of wing but i felt i could give it a go with my own flavour plus i'll be looking to add some extra saucy bits in the future.
First things first is the parts list

The first things to do in the build are to cut off any of the dags from the moulding process and sand back the foam cores.
After that its time to mark the slot for the motor mount which should end up with the mount sitting just above where the main spar lies.
Once the marking out has been done cut out the slot using either a hacksaw blade or a sawzall/reciprocating sawblade.
When the slot has been cut and everything lines up nice glue up the two wing halves in the centre using you glue of choice. Some use 3m77, I chose to use foam glue from HK.
When the glue for the wing halves has dried, spritz the main spar slot with water from a spray bottle and run a bead of polyurethane glue in it and place the carbon spars in with a bead of glue in between finishing with another spritz of water over the top. Secure into place using pins to hold the spars in place till the glue dries. Run some masking tape along the sides of the spar slots to prevent the excess glue sticking to the outside of the wing.
After a while the glue should foam up out of the slot. Make sure to slice off the excess before the glue has hardened too much.
Continue on to glueing the remaining spars in place.
When all spars are glued into place, glue the motor mount in with polyurethane glue taking care to make sure that the motor mount is centered in the slot. Use tape to secure it from moving while the glue cures.
After the glue has cured on all the spars and motor mount. Trim off any excess glue with a sharp blade. Continue on to glueing in servos, cutting out recesses for the gps, mag, reciever, video tx, ubec and slots for wiring to the central bay.
I have chosen to use a turnstile UHF antenna with my setup so the next step is embed it into the wing and feed it through to the reciever. here is a great tutorial on how to make your own turnstile uhf antenna
then proceed to filling any voids with spakfilla/spackle filler.
After all voids are filled and filler is sanded back with fine sandpaper clean off any loose dust with a damp cloth. Proceed to covering the wing with the laminate supplied in the kit. Set your iron to a high heat approximately 100 degress celsius/225 degrees farenheight. Work methodically in sections to ensure there are no wrinkles in the finish and work the laminate into all the equipment bays. Apply wing tape and decals
The winglets are next. Start by marking out the centreline and mark out the profile of the wing airfoil and apply glue. Attach the winglet and temporarily pin the winglet on using pins till the glue sets. Make sure that the winglet is set at 90 degrees to the wing. When the glue has set, run a bead of hot glue as a fillet around where the winglet attaches.
When the winglets are done, the front skids can be glued on. Prepare them first by gluing the pieces together. Fill in the corrugations with hotglue and run some electrical tape along the outside edge. Glue them onto the wing and run a fillet of hot glue where the skids join the wing.
The next stage is cutting and shaping of the elevons. When they placed on a flat surface the edge that attaches to the wing should be 90 degrees vertical from the benchtop. Mark out the elevon with a straight line coming from 1/3 the way along trailing edge tapering in towards inner edge approximately 25mm out. Round off the thicker end and de arris all the edges except the edge that attaches to the wing and sand all surfaces with sandpaper.
Wing tape or paint is applied next to the elevons then laminate is applied as well.
Attach the elevons to the wing using tape, first on the top the flip the elevon over and tape the bottom side.
Linkages are attached using sullivan clevisis and hollow carbon tube with threaded rod through the middle. I have attached the the linkage to the inner most hole of the servo arm and the other end is attached to the control horn 25mm above the elevon.
Prepare the equipment bay covers by slicing through the corrugated plastic on one side where it would act as a hinge. Cut out some slots to for magnets to be glued in then tape and hotglue the covers onto the wing.

On the Paris v5r3 board the Esc connects to pin e3, the left elevon to pin s11 and the right elevon to s12.
I like to calibrate the paris v5r3 board accelerometer on the ground beforehand with the nose of the wing sitting up about 4-5degrees to simulate the wings attitude in flight.

Once everything has been finished balance out the wing at the correct CG. The CG is located on the bottom of the wing 23.9mm - 9 3/8‘’ to 24.15mm - 9 1/2’’ from the nose back.
To trim out the elevons for its first flight lay a ruler across the elevon and wing top surface. Adjust the elevon upwards so that there is about a 2-3mm gap between where the elevon and the wing meet. The throws for the elevons work out to be 15mm in either direction.
When it comes time for the first flight you can either have the wing set to passthru mode for full manual control of the wing or horizon mode to keep it level for take off. Once up in the air set the wing into passthru mode to trim the wing properly in the transmitter. Here is a great vid to show some of the ways to launch the wing.
