A Working Commercial Solar Powered R/C Glider

Harness the power of the sun for all day flying

Industry First!

Solar Powered R/C flight is now possible thanks to the guys at Drone Industries. They not only have a cool name for a company, but they also have some serious brain power behind them. They've spent the last 16 months on this project to bring us the first ever sailplane that flys on solar power. It's called the Solius and it's a 2.85 meter wingspan powered glider. At the heart is a patent pending solar power controller that powers the custom outrunner motor swinging a 24x15 custom folding propeller. There is a 3S 3100mAH Li-ion battery on board and at cruise speed, the solar cells will actually be charging the battery by about 30 watts so the longer you fly the more capacity you have to work with, at least until the battery is fully charged. There is even regenerative braking if you want while descending to put even more energy back in the battery. This is amazing! You can literally fly all day if you wanted and never run out of juice. Even with no sun, the battery will provide well over 40 minutes by itself.

You'll certainly notice the solar cells built into the wings in the photos. They packed in sixteen 4.4Watt cells which totals over 70 watts of power. At cruise speed, the power system only uses 35-40 watts. It was engineered with aluminum and composite reinforcements to ensure the cells won't get damaged during landings and the wing breaks down into 4 pieces to pack up in your car. The whole plane weighs in at 3.3lbs. You can't see it in the photos but the wing tips have wheels underneath and there is a main wheel in the bottom of the fuse to help smooth out the landings. The Solius is available for pre-order right now for $1999.99 with expected arrival in late May.

Sorry, "First Ever Solar Powered R/C Glider" is nothing than marketing b**ls**t.
There are solar powered rc planes around since more than 20y.

Perhaps the write-up should be re-titled as "First Ever Production Solar Powered R/C Glider" (at least if it really gets released in May )

"First Ever Production Solar Powered R/C Glider" - even this is not correct. Sorry.

I'm not aware of any other hobby industry production solar aircraft.

Also fixed the typo above. My "brian" must not have been working.

They might not have been born when Graupner was doing it.

Jason,

This company seems to have sprung out of nowhere. I don't suppose many people will be willing to send of $2000 to an unknown recipient based on a couple of low res photos and some outline specifications.
Are there any flight videos or any independent reviews of the prototype, or even anyone who has actually seen this plane in person?

And you have to love, "Highly modified Selig Airfoil Design with Chamber".
If they took a Selig airfoil and highly modified it, then it's no longer a Selig airfoil at all.
And what kind of Chamber? Heart? Royal? Place for a cartridge in a gun?

For $2,000.00 I would rather by a NICE TD plane than this toy.

Nice plane and write up, but

Bob Boucher and his brother Roland would be the fathers the world's first solar-powered aircraft and the world's first practical electric radio controlled model airplane.
