Build Log

The Rubicon

It is with great reservation that I post a build log of the Wabbit evolution ... the Rubicon.

The reservation comes from the realisation that not one thing that I've blogged about has ever been completed
Edit:- I finished it ... yay ... go me
Having said that, the desire to have a DS model(s) ready for this year's season is high and the time to begin is now. Well ... at the rate I've been building lately, it maybe for the 2016 season ... but I doubt it.

After negotiations with Andrew (AVB) he's cutting the wing moulds on his CNC. The construction will be the same as his SCratcho curvy wing moulds. Corian bonded to laminations of ply.

The fuse mould will be of conventional, non-CNC methods. The fuse plug that was intended for the Wabbit will be reinvented as the Rubicon fuselage.

Dave I reckon if we do this again we should find some triaxial glass - it would be much easier to use one layer of triaxial instead of messing around with layers of straight and bias ...

Had a bemusing thing with the CNC preparations ... there's been a Madcam update earlier this week, which has improved some aspects, but caused a bit of confusion on Thursday which we finally sorted out. Then yesterday we were all set to go. Expected to spend 10 minutes positioning the mould working piece on the machine bed, and run the roughing cut. Over an hour later I was still trying to get the roughing toolpath done, but Madcam wouldn't do it. We tried creating more complex finishing toolpaths, which it did with no problem. But a no go for the roughing cuts. It really was terribly frustrating. I tried absolutely everything, but no go. I was starting to mutter accusations that this must be a software glitch, when dialog box pops up and says "Madcam update is available ". We downloaded and installed it and hey presto, everything ran sweetly! There must have been a bug that they had to sort out from the major update. The roughing and the flange planes are done nicely, and on Monday morning early we hope to start the finishing cut. Then of course we have to repeat the process for the bottom side ...!

Ply stability.

What grade of ply did you use Dave and Andrew?
I would hit the end grain and the exposed back of it with a couple of coats of varnish or something like that to seal it. With the fluctuations of humidity in our climate, it might not be totally stable otherwise.
It would be a pity to compromise that nice work you are doing.
