If anyone is interested in a motor/ prop update, a flying buddy and I have been playing with quad motors in our planes which is nothing new to a lot of you, I got a racerstar 2216-2000, which I loaned to a friend after he had read good reports on it to put in his 163, I understand what you are thinking straight away, it’s less kv. I felt the same way but, once you couple it with the gemfan flash 6x4.2 on 4s, the flash seems to make the plane take off easier and the speed seems equal if not slightly better. On landing the motor is cool to touch, I’m now going to put one in my new kit version.

Pretty frustrated with this plane now. Could not get it to takeoff successfully again after one fluke success. Cannot keep it straight. Tried hand launching again and it also went badly. Bent up the bottom again and bent the gear itself.

Been there, done that. All I can say is, I have learned (the hard way) that with flying wings, you have to be VERY careful to not have the CG too far back. In fact, I just err on the side of having it too far forward. This is working well for me with other wings, especially for launching. And in retrospect, I'm pretty positive that my (pretty awful and frustrating) experience with this plane were due to not having the battery far enough forward.
Can't promise that will help, but it's a thought... |

3) on stock setup, advance throttle gradually and feed in rudder. works for my 100%, ie, not a single crash. but i can understand if you wheel etc has some binding issue it may be a difference story which is why so many reported take off issues. |

Just got a used one. Now to get the rocket system. That was what really attracted me to this plane. Do any of you guys use the rocket system?

Yes... I use the rockets... it is cool... looks good, sounds good, but it does not increase speed. Better to get smoke cartridges. They last a lot longer.

Link to smoke cartridges? Are they easy to use?

I have not personally used the smokers, but have seen videos in this thread. HK sells them.

Well, mine has seen three crashes with major repairs and has added some glue weight. Although I have one of the red ones still in a box, its time for a wing modification on this old one to increase its wing area.
Intend to glue or fix in place the ailerons following the camber of the wing and add a balsa aileron of equal width behind it with the minor reflex included. Reuse the control horns and yes, longer control rods. Might have to move the battery back a bit for balance, but I think this will work and make take off on short grass easier. |

low rpm but decent speed on stock motor and 2s
I haven't flown my Komet in a long while - as I find the launch difficult, and also the 7x5 or 7x6 APC clone prop from HK was a tad too slow for me, on 2s. I needed to go down on rpm as the neighbors don't like noise at all, and high-pitched noise seems that much worse than other noise. And I actually don't like the high-pitched noise either.
Now I grab the plane differently, with one finger extended towards the rear, and I changed the prop to a Graupner Speed Prop 7x7, and I really like how it flies - also, I reduced throws further, for smoother flying, I think I am at 70% throws although I moved the pushrods pretty far in on the servo side - so deflections are small, and that feels good and controllable, and the plane grooves; negative differential (more throw down than up) makes for axial rolls light was not so great in the evening, and the prop needs some balancing, but so far a happy camper with this bird

It’s been awhile since I flew mine and I forgot what a nice flyer it is. Wheel takeoffs are still a bit of terror for me. Glad I bought a spare when they were on sale. I might have to add the rocket as I’ve got the switch but haven’t wanted to mess the CG up.
Cheers—Stacker |
