Build Log

Saab Viggen Pusher

Hi Guys,

Having built Steve Shumates Excellent Gripen (one of my favourites), I set about designing the jet it replaced, the Viggen. Another one of my favourites. I love the funky shape and the awesome camouflage patterns. I saw one fly at RAF waddington air show last year and made my mind up to add it to my design list.

SAAB VIGGEN Swedish Air Force Historic Flight At RAF Waddington Airshow 2013 (6 min 20 sec)

Its a slightly larger parkjet with a 700mm wingspan, as I'm going to put in a larger motor in it than my usual 2212-6 2200kv. Its the Turnigy 2836 on 4s. Hopefully should make it nice and fast! I modified the shaft on the stock item, by grinding a groove in it, and tapping it through to make it work as a pusher rather than the tractor configuration. There are a few links on Hobbykings website blog on how to do it Of course it should still fly with the 2212-6 motor.

Plans are posted on my Blog :-

Thanks guys! I wish my workbench was a beautiful job!! Anyhow I connected and set up the canards, stuck together the turtledeck and rough sanded the plane with 120 grit to quickly get the approximate shape. I'll use finer papers as it gets closer to completion.

I also utilised a spent rocket stick to make the wing pitot tubes / hard point.

Progress...

Canopy fitted with magnets, control horns made from 3mm ply, elevon links connected and adjusted. Prop attached.

Currently a 3s 2200 mah battery sits squarely in the middle of the battery compartment and it hits the cg position. I feel I can get a 4s 2600 in there if I needed to.

Throws are quite large so I've dialed in 50% expo. Hope it's not too twitchy.

All prepped for the maiden. Hopefully Sunday.

Good luck with the maiden, I really like the Swedish camo for the Viggen - any decisions for the colour scheme yet?

Viggen Maiden

Success!

In the blustery winds, she was bounced around a bit, but once I had gotten the feel for her, I managed to feel confident enough to do some low passes, and then some high alpha hovering, in fact I had her going backwards against the wind, felt very comfortable in the air!

very pleased

First flight :-

LOOKS AWESOME!!!
the viggen was a beauty plane... on my 10th birthday I received one airfix plastic model,I could not resist to send it to the air and make it fly... a complete disaster, but lot of fun on the unique "fly"...
perhaps this might be the time to do serious (35year later)...

congrats

Put balsa leading edges on and shaped the trailing edges. Applied lightweight filler all over and sanded smooth. Applied a base coat of paint to help reveal the surface quality.

Nicely done. Are you using elevons and moveable canard? If so is canard mixed with the elevon for pitch control ?

Seems would be a handful using both independently for pitch.
