46 Gram Micro 3D with 7.7g Brushless Motor!

Gary Jones just finished up a test model for the new 7.2 gram prototype brushless he designed. The model weighs 46 grams RTF with a 2 cell 170 mahr pack. Intial testing shows more than 1.2:1 thrust to weight as it jumps out of his hand vertically. A giant thunderstorm has postponed the maidened.

Here are some pics

That's pretty cool.
What kind of controller did he use?

Is that "7.2 gram prototype brushless" destined for commercial production? What is the current draw on 2 cells?

Gary and I are working towards commercial production of the motor. So for now we are not going to publish any closer views.

The BL controller is a CC Phoenix Micro 10 with the heatshring removed and smaller wires added. The receiver is the Garparin Penta.

The motor has a GWS 5x3 prop and draws about 1.6 amps off of a fresh charge and turns about 7500 rpm.

Those are some ailerons, you know that if the roll rate catches up with the prop the plane will stop flying. Kidding asside, beautiful workmanship.

Bob and Gary,
Nice job on the plane and motor. Can't wait to hear how the maiden flight goes. 2004 = the year of micro brushless motors.

Big Ailerons?

Gary built a 14 inch span version of this plane (which has some influence from Jason Schulman's Exhila and others) and it flew very well on a dual M-20 drive and a 1 cell 250 mahr. It would harrier, rolling circles, etc. The controls were very nice with about 50% expo dialed in. But the power was not enough for prop hanging. This attempt should be able to prop hang!

I can hardly wait to get one. For my still unsatified ambition: a full 3D capable 40gram (or so) Pixel heli. I have the Falcon servo's ready since half a year

Now I'm getting really interested Alex! How about a new thread with airframe photos/details? I'm currently flying a brushless Piccolo Pro and wring it out like one of my big birds
