Rittinger ME-262 (again!)


Well, all those lovely posts were sent off to data heaven, so I thought I would start the thread up again.

I am nearly ready to glass. Finally installed the three nylon wing bolts lastnight and cut the canopy to shape. Here is a pic of its current status.

Glassed one side of the wing, tail feathers, and bottom of the fuse. The nacelles are all glassed up. Tomorrow nite....glasing of the top wing, other side of the tail feathers, and the top of the fuse. Nearly ready to primer!

The only real carving on this thing is the nose block (took two minutes) and the front and rear blocks for the nacelles. If you have a sanding block with 60 grit or a dremmel it takes about two minutes to shape them, then hit them with the 220 fine grit and finish them off!

Just finished putting glass on the other sides of the parts. Tomorrow its the wipe down layer of epoxy, then on to primer sunday. Should be painted by mid-week.

Finished sanding off the primer from the fuse and most of the wing. Have to do the tail feathers and the nacelles. Should be ready for paint this weekend!

ME-262 is painted! I am going to put on the panel lines and dull cote the entire airframe in the next couple of days, then hopefully fly it in a week or so (soccer kids infest every field suitable for flying this thing )

Hey Slope...Beautiful!

Question: I am building a K&A A-10 and am about to cover it. I wonder what the advantage of glassing versus using covering?

Is Glass Lighter? Is it More Durable?

Last one:

Could you desribe how you glassed your plane?

I have used heavy fliberglass to build a boat, but nothing this light. The A-10 needs to be as light as possible.

Hey Kirby,

Check Jim Ryan's website out under DOWNLOADS. I use his method for glassing all my planes (home.fuse.net/ryan). It is more durable than covering, and because its attached with epoxy, it never bubbles, shrinks, or comes loose (unless something terrible happens ). The big benefit for me is there are no seams, and it paints great! Plus, its a permanent finish that will never need replaceing. You may need to touch up areas after a season or two, but not have to pull all the covering off and re-apply it.

I do not think you want to glass the A-10 wing. I built one, and it needs to be exceptionally light. I would prefer to cover the wing with shirnk covering, and then glass the fuse, because it has lots of plastic on the top deck. It will be easier to get a matching finish if you glass the fuse and then paint it (rather than paint the plastic and then film cover the lower fuse sections). You may want to get some lite cloth and try glassing an old plane, or a piece of balsa to see how it works.
