Outerzone plans built gallery
With the recent AMA request for Model Builder plans being pulled from his site, Steve (WMD) should know that all of the work he puts into maintaining the greatest repository of RC airplane plans is not only appreciated, but put to use. I know that I have another 30+ years left to keep building (as long as arthritis doesn't set in too early), and I have enough plans to keep 3 generations busy for a lifetime.
But, my bits of built plans plus yours, plus his, and his... will add up to at least one or 2 lifetimes of built models. Please, say thanks to Steve and let him see what his work (and the work of his contributors) ends up as. So, thank you Steve. Here are the 4 I have completed so far. Still working on #5. Post yours and the link to the plan. ImagesView all Images in thread |

I have only built one of the plans I got from Outerzone out of balsa, I have built a couple out of foam, I am hoping my piloting skill improves enough so I can build a few more out of balsa.

I haven't built anything from Outerzone plans (yet), but I do keep a bunch on hand for reference when designing new ships. I do, though, plan to redo some old classics (such as the Andrews A-Ray), with new internals.

What is the AMA's reason to ask for these plans being pulled?
With as much effort that goes into bringing youth into this hobby, what are they worried about? I don't see anyone manufacturing these plans as kits, but all I see is modellers like myself who love to build, a source for plans for scratch building airplanes. I am also a full scale private pilot and am a big supporter of the EAA's Young Eagles program I am also a long time member of AMA and feel they do the hobby a lot of good, but without hearing their views, at this point, I feel like they are wrong if they are worried about copyright protection. I ave seen individuals on Ebay "selling" these same plans for a profiit. AMA needs to go after these individuals through Ebay. Some of you know who Uncle Willie was. Many complained about him, but I met him once and he would take an old set of plans,-faded, torn, holes in them, glue gobs on them, some folded so many times , they were in horrible shape. Actually mostly unuseable. Willie being a professional draftsman, would completely redraw and restore these plans and they were like brand new when he was done with them. No one else was making any effort to preserve so many model airplane plans from the past I would read here on RC Groups about people screaming copyright infringement. Willie wasnt just copying plans, he was "restoring" them. I have some of his plans are they are for the most part, better than the original kitmakers put out! Well how many of the kit makers even carried those plans anymore? ( Most of them went out of business a long time ago) Perhaps the AMA is not happy with all the sources of revenue they have now, and wants more. |

He did a great service to the plans community. I wish his full collection had been preserved properly. Andy |

I also have an Outerzone plans build on the table right now (the 48" 1/2A Miss America). I am also about to send off plans to get a short kit cut from some OZ plans. Steve is doing a tremendous service for those of us who still build from plans. I am far from a good builder, but I sure like building planes. I am not the fastest either, but it's still enjoyable. The Northrop/AMA plans grab is a bit irritating, but Steve is doing the honorable thing and pulling down the MB plans.
EDIT: CKIMNEY, is that the Berkeley Beaver? I have that short kit as well. I thinking of building it with a little OS .15 I picked up. I also have the Senior Telemaster plans that RCM stiffed me for, so I can build my short kit that I have for that as well. Outerzone is like crack to me. Steve is awesome, and an enabler.... EDIT 2: I clicked the link, that is the Berkeley Beaver, nice build, do you have a build thread thread? |

A .15 is probably too big for it. I had an eFlite 480 and it was well powered. It flew well until it met a neighbor's tree. It was my first scratch build when I got back into flying. Have fun building it. |

On the Beaver, I was planning on knocking the dihedral down a bit and adding ailerons, and beefing up the wing a a bit. Looking at the plans it could use a little more beef in the middle, good to know your experience confirms that suspicion. Perhaps a .10 might be better than the .15, or even an .09. I have a couple old Cox .09s with throttle rings that would work, I just don't know if I want that much mess under the cowling.... Maybe I'll go electric, but few things sound as nice, nor smell as good, as a glow engine zinging by
But I digress... Some pictures of a current Outerzone plans build. Unfortunately, my ADD is getting the best of me and I have not made a lot of progress since I built the left wing.... I also still need to add shear webs and come up with a better dihedral brace for the Miss America wing. These old free flight planes weren't exactly beefy.... I suppose if I went with a light electric setup I could make it lighter, but I currently have my mind set on an .049 Black Widow for this one. Here's some pictures of my Miss America currently being built: ImagesView all Images in thread

Whiskykid, those are some great builds! Your electric conversions look great too!

Here's another one that I built as a micro RC conversion. It flew a few times but wasn't able to get decent control.

I taught many students to fly on their Sig Kadet. Best trainer ever. But I never had one of my own. Last spring I wanted to build a slow flyer, but not quite ready for an old timer yet. Still like aerobatics and touch and goes.
I found a plan for the Kadet on Outerzone. Plan I.D. 2950. I printed out the pdf, and then drew my own plans to suit my construction style and beefing up construction where needed. I don't use copy companies to blow up plans, but just use a ruler and my calculator. Super easy and fast to do. I also never build to the original size as I like larger planes - bigger flies better. My Kadet has a 90" wingspan, 70" fuselage, and weighs 7.5 lbs all up. It flies with an old OS 60 . It is a fantastic flier. Thanks Outerzone! |

You and me both! Those plans are like crack to me! I have more grand illusions of building, it's almost scary. Now if I could win the lotto or have some other windfall, I might actually find the time. I sit and hit refresh over and over, or surf through the thumbnails. I am always astounded at how many plans I come across that I have not seen before. I find myself looking for used glow engines just to fit some set of plans that I have downloaded and have illusions of building. I have quite a pile of used glow engines. I have even started thinking about building a CL plane since I have an old McCoy .35 Redhead. I also have some smaller CL/free-flight engines. Outerzone is a great site.
EDIT: Whiskykid, I can see where you could have some build time, living in PA (enough rain to stay in once in a while ). We lived there for less than a year. By that point, my wife was so tired of the rain, that when my old job called offering me another job, she said "YES!!" before they had even talked to me. I worked for FKC out by the airport. It was a great job. I absolutely loved the area. Being sandwiched between the mountains and the ocean was almost heaven to me, but the wife didn't see it that way. I only ended up working for FKC for about seven months. I still wish I had that job, but such is life... |
