Introducing the new Komodo FPV racer by Sector3 Research

I have been fortunate enough to be a part of the the development of this new project. Something that has never been seen before.

I will post my review of the frame and all the information as it becomes available.
But first here is the introduction.

The Komodo was designed from the ground up as a tunable, fpv, race platform. We started with a clean screen and began with the intention of building the most versatile, tunable, fpv race quad on the market today. From the removable electronics tray, to the iconic mowhawk, Komodo is sure to put you in the winners circle and turn heads at the field.

During the design phase the engineering team took into consideration all of the small issues we had with other frames, read forum posts and did our best to solve as "mini" problems as we could. We hope our vision meets and exceeds your expectations as a durable, tunable and easily repairable racing mini quad.

Features:
*Removable electronics tray - Allows for much easier building of the electronics outside the frame in a separate unit.
*Removable FPV tray - Like the electronics tray, the FPV tray allows for building outside the main chassis.
*Fully protected battery - The battery is encased in the 2mm carbon fiber frame walls and aluminum spacers.
*Fully protected FPV / electronics - The electronics and FPV equipment are also encased inside the carbon fiber walls of Komodo.
*One wrench fits all screws - One wrench, one screw size. Simple.
*Easily converted to X8 - During the initial design phase we started with an X8 simply because of the frame would house and protect enough equipment for an X8 then a quad would be no problem.
*Motor mounts fit a variety of motors
*ESC mounted on top for ample airflow when running high power or in high temps.
*270mm Diameter
*12mm booms
*190g Bare Frame Weight
*Will handle up to a 7" prop
*Built for use with 30.5mm x 30.5mm flight controllers such as Taulabs Sparky, CC3D, Revo, Naze32, Flip32, KK mini, etc.
*Uses a 30.5mm x 30.5mm "mini" distribution board. (not included)

*****Pre Order for $179.00*****

The main chassis and mowhawk are made from pure carbon fiber, not fiberglass with a carbon skin. Only the best material sourced and produced here in the USA. You will find that our carbon is second to none in aesthetics, stiffness and resistance to delamination upon direct impact. The cross bars are made from aluminum and secured with 3mm metric hardware. Simply put, your electronics and FPV gear are safe and sound inside the walls of Komodo.

Infinitely adjustable motor angles. The left and right motors are locked together but independent front and rear. By simply loosening two screws on the center blocks the boom angle can be adjusted quickly and easily.

By loosening the pivot screws on either side of the chassis the fpv camera can be adjusted from 0 to 12 degrees of tilt or anywhere in between.

Battery changes are also quick and easy on Komodo. Remove 4 clips and the battery is in your hand. Accepting up to a 148mm x 55mm x 28mm battery gives hundreds of battery options. CG is also easily adjusted using the extra room to move the battery

The swing balance hole located in the center of the mowhawk allows quick, easy CG checks when changing battery types and/or equipment.

Komodo is very tough but to say it is unbreakable would not be true. Booms break sometimes under hard enough impact. Knowing that, our engineers designed Komodo to make boom replacements easy and painless. No holes, to drill for wiring, no wiring to snake down the tube. Simply remove the motor clamps, loosen two of the center block screws and the boom slides right out. Slide the new one in, align your motors and away you go. (A setup station to make this process even more accurate is coming very, very soon. Stay tuned.)

The photos show it with the hq 5x4.5 props. But the unit can accept larger. Currently i run mine with the hq 6x4.5 props.

So if it was designed as an x8, that would make it a camera bird first and a mini racer as an aside? Just curious? Looks different, which is good, but how practical is the "spine" in a crash. Got vid?

Hello.
Not necessarily. The X8 platform offers several handling benefits over a standard quad that we wanted to research in a performance setting rather than a 'work' setting. However, knowing that an X8 houses twice the equipment, exhibits twice the power and more weight than a standard quad it just seemed logical for us to test with an X8 first.
.
It is ok on the curiosity as that what drives us all, right?
.
The mowhawk is very practical in a crash. That is like saying how practical is a roll cage in a race car. The more protection the better. Plus the mowhawk is used for more than just a fancy handle, protector or a chassis balance device. More equipment is coming from Sector3 that will enable the full use of the mowhawk.
.
The props in the pictures are in fact HQ 5x4.5 bullnose. Komodo can handle up to a 7" prop but a 5-6" prop is more practical.
.
In answer to the emails the kit price is $179.00usd.
Pre-Orders are now open at http://www.sec3research.com
Also, we are waiting on confirmation from our carbon plate manufacturer in the US for delivery times. Due to the Christmas holidays US companies are a little laggy this time of year which is to be expected. With that said we are pushing to begin shipping 2nd to 3rd week in January. Komodo was ready for release so we went for it and released the frame to the public.

For those pilots who like to fly low and scrape the deck from time to time there will be optional Skid Wheels. With replaceable skids you can get low on the abrasive surfaces without fear of wearing out the bottom of your Komodo chassis. Mount it solid, let it spin, be creative. When it wears, roll it around.

looks like the love child of a mad max car and quad, which is no bad thing!

i like the fact you guys have taken a lot of time designing something that not only looks different, but takes pride in the fact that all fc/fpv electronics are fully protected!

will be watching with great interest!

Glad u like it man. We spent a lot of effort in trying to protect the electronics, and prevent damage as much as possible from a crash, and also spent a lot of time on making it easy to work on. The whole "dirty plate can come out as one piece..by swinging the mohawk up and sliding the tray out as one piece.
