Radian

This entry relates to the Parkzone Radian, Radian_discussion_thread.

This story started like this:
Danny gave me as a gift, a Radian fuselage (thanks Danny !).
This fuse had a previous life as an FPV platform, with a power pod, pusher style, above and behind the wing trailing edge.
Dremel tool in hand, the pod was cut off.

I purchased a brand new set of wings and horizontal stabilizer from my LHS, 15 mi away ( HobbyTown, $44 total).

I used a 70 g brush less motor ( no data on make, model, specs), an equally unspecified ESC (I guess 30 A from its size...) , 2200 mAh 3S 25C Lipo battery , and a HK Super Kinetic folding propeller. Link to the HK folding propeller: Super_Kinetic_Prop

The motor was mounted in a non standard fashion , with the motor outside and ahead of of the Radian motor mount.
The motor current draw was 21 A at full throttle, on a bench static test.

The fuselage was covered with clear scotch heavy duty packing tape , which I shrunk with a sealing iron. This gave a lot of strength to the wobbly fuse...
Similar treatment with clear tape was applied to the wings, albeit not covering them completely, mostly the leading edge and the wing roots.

A couple of pictures are attached to this post showing the plane.
A roundel sticker for a HZ Corsair was placed under the right wing, three brown packing tape bars under the left one.

a video of the maiden flight can be found clicking on the link below:

JureZ ~ using the hard motor brake will stop your prop from spinning as you're gliding. The instructions are within your ESC manual.

Thanks flboy286,

if I only had the manual for this esc !
Maybe I can try with some Hobby King generic ESC programming instructions..

decalage mod

did the decalage mod, described by Paul Naton

Paul Naton : parkzone-radian-modifications-and-set-ups.html

the change let me remove 3 oz of weight I had in the nose section to make it flyable.

the CG location is 70 mm (2.75 in) back from the wing leading edge, as per the Vanessa machine.

AUW is 940g with 2200 mAh battery.

It flies wonderfully now !

RADIAN wing and a carbon tube fuselage with V-Tail.

looking for a destiny for the Radian wings, got the idea of making a pure glider using the wing and a carbon tube fuselage with V-Tail.

This version has only V-Tail control (two servos) . Very little control authority.

Flying at Lariat Canyon, Walnut Creek, CA.

Franken Radian at Shell Ridge

Here is one more chapter in the history of my Radian.

Built using the original Radian wings, a Franken Glider Plane.

The Radian wings, were modified with added (cut) ailerons and two 9 g servos .
It is then a three channel system: Rudder , Elevator and Ailerons (on a Y cable) .

V-Tail , carbon tube fuselage (a kind gift from RCG Member Cityevader , Thanks!)

length : 44 " or 1165 mm
wing span : 80 " or 2000 mm
wing root : 7.7 " or 200 mm
AUW : 26.4 oz or 743 g
wing loading : 6.6 oz/sqin

Nominal Radian CG : 62 mm from Leading Edge

Pure glider, no motor .
It is much faster than the Radian as it has less drag with the CF tube fuse and V-Tail.

flew the radian with the recently acquired "Emeter II RDU", was able to log elevation, flight battery voltage and current.

Very nice product, at a very reasonable price, now on sale.
