Build Log
1:12 96" Douglas c47 build log
Hi forum, thought I'd document my build, this will be my first time working with balsa and traditional construction. I'm going to attempt to build a 1:12 scale c47 from this plan: http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=2223
96 inch wingspan Electric powered. Scale windows, lighting inside Nav lights Retracts I have experience with rc but never attempted anything like this before. I'll update with more details as and when. I'm going to build then sides first then bend them to shape with the horizontals. Haven't decided if I'll sheet it with 1/8 balsa and fibreglass . Also I may hot wire the wing. Some of the challenges will be building scale retracts, adding flaps maybe. I have a friend who will be airbrushing the details once it's built. |

Power System and Landing gear
Power System. I'm just currently deciding on what power system to use for this plane. I believe a scale 3 blade prop should be 11.4 inches. Therefore I think i'm going to go for a 11 inch 3 blade prop. I would like to fly it on 4s. Therefore I will go with this motor
Turnigy Aerodrive SK3 - 3548-700kv Brushless Outrunner Motor 11x7 3 blade prop 4s LIPO. Landing gear, Just got the wheels in the post as well, and I am going to have to make my own landing gear. Tail - https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...mm_1_Pair.html Mains - https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...earch=sullivan I'll hopefully have the fuselage box section built in a weeks time. If anyone has any thoughts on the power system above, do let me know, haven't bought it yet.. |

Richie,
Subscribed. Great choice of aircraft. DC3/C47 has always been a favorite of mine. I bought these plans from Flying Models years ago along with Paris Whites plan for the same size model. At the time my choice in electric power would have been a pair of Astro Flight 40 cobalt geared motors. Your plans call for .45 glow engines so just find the equivalent in a Brushless motor. I am sure a few experienced electric builders will chime in here with specific motors to use. Good Luck I will be along for the ride Stan |

So i just looked around for some motors that could run on 4s with an 11 inch prop. Not many people seem to have done this. From what ive read. The tony lombardo plan requires .45 sized motors. But the paris white one requires .50-.60 sized. So not sure what to go with . One chap has gone with 1500w on each motor with 6s. which seems overkill! I guess i am not going to know the weight of the aircraft until the end. hmmm I'll get them on order. whats the worst that could happen! |

Do you have the build article for your plans? If not, I can scan mine and email you a copy.
One thing I did not like about Lombardo's plan and White's plan they do not show a front or a top view to be able to measure the distance from C/L of engine to the fuselage thus determining the max prop size that can be used. Lombardo used 3 bladed 10-4 props on his Enya .45s and at max power 11,500 rpm had a combined static thrust of 6.5 lbs. His model weighted 13 lbs dry including 2 lbs of ballast in the nose. He states the 45s are more than enough power. Let me know if you need the article. Stan |

Only the 'rich' in Cardiff can afford balsa
Thought about a C-47/DC-3 as a future project, (though probably in Depron for us cheap guys ). Will keep an eye on progress. |

Nothing wrong with foam. I plan to use it on this plan as well. It will surely lighten the model. I am sure you have see this 10 foot version. I love the way it flys. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1235769 |

Day 1 (again!) - decided to build it properly, sides first etc..Quote:
So far Balsa has cost about £40...i'll keep a running total and also compile a full parts list as i go...i'll update the first post... Quote:
Great! Hopefully I wont be a disappointment! |

1st update...sides built
Not much to report, spent a few hours on it this morning, scrapped the initial plan of building the top first. and Thanks to Stan, I have the article now, which does help.
I've so far built the two sides.... not sure how often to post updates... i'm sure the frequency will vary... Anyway.. pics |

Alright Rich. your on your way. You just might get me to start one. I think the Lombardo plan is much simpler than the Paris plan. At least you have a built-in jig to work with. Not sure if either one is exact scale but the object is to make a coat of paint fly. Duck scale. If it looks like a duck etc, ect. Update when you can.
No deadlines in plans building. |

Beware... the plan is not accurate!
Can anyone shed any light on this... The cross section of the formers on the plane plan shows that the width of the Box Section G and H are both 105mm. However, on the plan view the fuselage tapers steadily to the rear...
Is the fuselage box supposed to be build on top of the plan....If it is, the plan is incorrect. Pics below... any ideas? My thoughts are that G and H definitely contradict with the top down view... which one is correct... hmmmm. R |
