12V or 24V power supply for Cellpro PowerLab 6
Moving up to larger Lipos and a Cellpro Power Lab 6 charger and I'm a little confused as to the power supply I will need. I have no intention of parallel charging my batteries so wondering if I need the 24V.
At this time, 4 cell lipos are the largest battery I use , but I will be needing 6 or 8 cell for the project I'm working on right now. So, 2 questions really. First, will the 24V just give me shorter charge times on the larger packs ? And second, when charging smaller packs, will I need to switch to 12V power ? ( don't get why I'm not understanding this, must be getting old) Any help would be appreciated. p.s. First when speaking of batteries you must state all the specifications. Merely stating the cell count (1S, 2S, etc) is insufficient. You must include the mAh to be meaningful.
The difference between 12V input and 24V input to the PL6 is the maximum power output from the charger. The PL6 provides maximum power out with about 30V input. However it is very close to 100% with 24V input. The difference is only important if you are charging large batteries or a number of smaller batteries in parallel. There is a calculator in the FMA (Revolectrix) web site which will explain power requirements. http://www.revolectrix.com/PL6_calculators_Main.htm If you are using a 24V power supply there is no need to switch the input voltage when charging smaller batteries. The power supply you have referenced will be quite satisfactory for all your charging needs. Last, if you think you will be getting 8S batteries why don't you consider the PL8 instead of the PL6? Glen |

Just finances at this time, but I need to make this purchase now as my old Icharger just bit the dust ( start button working intermittently). The PL6 will charge up to 8S according to the website, and thank you for the answer. I pretty much figured it out after doing some more reading and I had already found those calculators this afternoon.
My intention was to buy the PL8, but possibly cost prohibitive at this time. |

Revolectrix has some Power Lab calculators you can play with to answer this kind of question. You can plug in different numbers for supply voltage, pack size, etc. and see how things change depending on your specific circumstances.

For the price difference between the Turnigy and the PL6 when you use the coupon code, I would go with the PL6 hands down. I own two PL6 now and got rid of the Hyperion, Turnigy, and other chargers I owned.
I use a 12v 62amp supply and parallel charge 7 3S 2200mah packs at 40 amps without problem. However that is my spare supply. I mostly use a 25.2v 38 amp supply. I make up my own supplies from pulled server supplies like many others around here. |

Congratulations on the new charger. I'm sure you'll be happy with your selection. In addition support here directly from the folks at Revolectrix there are also many knowledgeable folks who have been using this charger for quite some time.
