Manta RG65

Almost ready to test. Bulb and fins are from Rood Ars and look fantastic. First race will be in Albuquerque , just a few months away.

great looking boat

great looking boat David. I think that design will do good
in light air of ABQ. would you mind sharing your thoughts
after the regatta about the boat. Inquiring minds want to
know.
Thx Mike

I would be happy to. Going to test a couple different bulbs leading up to the race. This Manta is changed a bit from the original in that it has a bit fuller bow than Andy's final design. So I am excited to see her sail against Ben's skinny. She's ready to test now

Manta RG65

Maiden voyage today was a bit underachieving. No wind to speak of sadly. However I am pleased with the balance.

Manta RG65

Awesome test day. Ben brought his Skinny along for a benchmark. Skinny was amazingly fast with his German Campos rig, so it was a delight to see Manta keep up. Next up will be to sort the rig and drill the bulb. 700g is a bit much.

nice report

nice report David. as a skinny owner some guide lines
most early boats came with a 600+ gram bulb one of
the newer skinny's has bulbs from 523 grams thru to
600+

The Skinny ' s acceleration from a dead stop or out of a tack is ridiculous. that's where I noticed the biggest difference. once the matter got going it could keep up but from a dead stop it was a little slower

Hi David, interesting, I had the impression that exactly this acceleration was a strong point of my manta2017. Have not sailed against a Skinny though!
Mine seems happiest with a 615 g ballast at around 940 g total.

Great to see a m17 running in the US, thanks for sharing your build!

Its always fun to see modifications of other sails boats.
So a couple of pics of a winch drum, losing some weight.

Any chance to reply with source of the original drum? Also if it is carbon, aluminum, plastic or other? Thanks, Dick L.

It s a plastic drum from a GWS winch.

Have done that to all my GWS drums. Brings drum down form 5gr to 3gr. Not bad for and RG65, where total weight is less than 1000gr, meaning the weight savings are about 0.2%

So I have been looking for an RG-65 sailboat to buy. I don't want a DF-65. I have a 10 year old balsa wood boat (which can and will beat DFs at our pond) but I NEEEEEEEEEEED a new boat.

So yesterday I got to thinking with all these guys on here building new trick boats this would be the place to see someone has a nice boat they might part with.

thanks
STEVE
