SCOUTS and the Frog WASP.

Becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of new blood in this obsession/addiction that some of us call a hobby I am trying something different.

Being a Scout leader. I am able to guide some of the youth members away from a life of crime and introduce them to hobbies.

Some of them (in fact most of them) have never held a hobby knife, sandpaper or sniffed glue and dope.

Something simple to start.
How about a Frog WASP 12 catapult glider.
Plan PDF attached.

First step is to print the plan at 100% and glue the parts to a hard piece of ply or as I used a kitchen chopping board. I had some which were about 2mm thick.

Glue them on with some PVA or white glue.

Then cut them out with scissors to make some awesome templates.

Draw around your templates and cut out the pieces.

If you use 100 wide balsa you will get more out of the sheet.

Check out the pics.

I could have cut them closer to the line but that would ruin half the fun.

I did cut the wing and tailplane saddle square with the bandsaw .

Next we will need some tools.

Knives and Cutting boards. Gotta save the tables.
Some Self adhesive palm sanding sheets stuck to some 100mm sheet.
Some Cyano and PVA.

Some 75mM blocks for the correct dihedral or you can use the .

Sweet Lets go do it.

Well that went well. Not.

The prep work was really good.

Before we do that next time we might first have lessons on how to cut a piece of balsa and then sand to a line.

Silly of to assume something so simple could be so difficult .

Still it sorted out those with any ounce of aptitude towards modeling.

Life is about learning.

I just had a fresh delivery of very nice balsa from these guys.

Thanks to the generous support from AMAS. http://amas.org.au/
We can expand the programme over the school holidays.

Excellent quality balsa in 3mm and 1.5mm 900X100mm.
I can thoroughly recommend the supplier for quality and packaging.
Not one piece of damaged stock.

Great stuff mate.
I remember building something similar in the Air league (before I realized I was too stupid to get into the Airforce).
It's great to see kids are still learning this stuff.
