Vtol Plane Success

I am seeking feedback from all successfull VTOL plane pilots with knowledge to share.
The "VERTIGO" VTOL plane is stable and easy to hover and transitions outbound into forward flight and transitions inbound back to hover or can take off and land conventionally.
It requires a 8 computer channel radio, 8/9 servos, 3 gyros, MAX OS 46VX-DF & 9x5 prop producing 10lb thrust inside a nacelle duct with 1/16 maximum gap.
Intermediate to advanced building skills are required to scatch build from plans.
Helicopter or simulator experience is required to hover it.
It uses 2 mixed pitch/yaw vanes and 1 roll vane to hover.
It is an absolute blast to fly and has got me making a new and bigger VTOL to come.

Er ... yes ... this is an electric forum ...

I know that VTOL with transition has been achieved with electric power before. Also using vanes for control in the hover.

This is the one, I think the builder was Tom Hunt.

I will correct myself, the model above didn't transition. Found this:

Greg and others,

the white twin motor tilt wing model is a Bob Kress Design I built for him. It was only a hover model (which it did quite well, BTW)

I produced and flew a number of tilt nacelle fully transitionable models for Grumman in the late 80's/ early 90's, then published my own design in the aug/sept 1994 issue of MAN. A few others have sucessfully repeated or extrapolated on that design. Including "don's" canard prop design, which uses mush of Grumman's patented vanes in the wake control design.

I just don't have the time to pursue a VTOL electric model at the moment.... though I have no doubt I could make something of the big white whale Bob K designed.

Regards
Tom Hunt

Tom Hunt also designed the Vertigo seen at the top of this post. I bought the plans for it back in the early 90's or late 80's (foggy). I still have them but never built it. I have been thinking about building an electric one out of foam. I have found some cheap light weight heading hold gyros to use in it. With the right lipo cells and ducted fan it should work. I might stick a small gws motor on it to get some yaw control in hover. If I do it I'll start a build thread.

Nice looking plane! Anyone thought of thrust vectoring configuration like the Raptor?

Vtol Twin Electric

OK I finally made an electric VTOL and I must say it is far easier to build and test and it works great.

Lets see if this can be scaled up for the military. I can see the Marines coming in riding in a bunch of cans.
