Blackhorse Fieseler Storch

Hi All,

Has anyone out there converted the big 112inch storch to electric.
Will be picking up a kit in a few weeks and want to get components ready first.

Was thinking of using my power 110 on 9s on the 18lb kit which should give around 100-110w/lb.

Flight characteristics are like a high wing trainer so i'd reckon 100w/lb would be ok.

Any thoughts out there.

Cheers
Andy

Have done a few static tests with my 110. 9 cells with a zoar 20x8 gave 52amps @1980watts. On 10s gave 67amps and 2250watts. With the max amps @65 i'd have to be carefull or prop down.

Aiming for approx 80w/lb the fully laden kit will be around 18lb this will require around 1440watts. Si I could either go 9s if extra weight is needed or possible 6/7cells and save a little weight.

Any thoughts out there on the above ?

Hi Andy,

I am certainly no expert but have you considered using eCalc as a guide to give you a starting point?

Whilst there it no substitute for real-world meter readings, using eCalc to play with the variables (prop size / pitch / battery cell count) might guide you somewhere close to where you want to be initially.

I have found that using it in this way got me close to what I wanted and time spent looking at alternatives in the software saved me investing in over-spec'd kit (particularly ESC) that, just to play safe, I might otherwise have spent hard earned cash on. Personally, for my chosen setup on a Cub conversion the predicted watts/amp readings were also fairly close to the actuals.

Hope this helps.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the info.
I've run the numbers as suggested and best set up will be 8 or 9s with a 100amp esc on a 20x8.

Thanks
Andy

Converted mine with HK 1.60 brushless motor, 100 amp HV ESC, and 10s 5000 mah pack. Had to build a plywood motor box, removing the firewall and extending the sides to the correct length. The batteries loaded through the canopy hatch. I got rid of all the lead I put in the nose for the gas (DLE 30) version.

Hi ,

I'm curious on your set up , did you use full throttle at any point. I've considered 10s on my e-flite 110 which will stand the power but keeping an eye on the amps, but unsure if the models requires this power to fly scale.

I've used a motor box from a seagull kit bolted to the firewall and still had to use 30mm extensions to get to the correct length but my lipos stop at the firewall. Do you envisage more weight needed up front ?

Thanks
Andy

Hi,

I've decided the e-flite 110 may not give me enough in reserve, so have purchased a Turnigy G160 245KV. Reviews are good and reliable.

Have run up the turnigy on 10cells and must say I'm impressed. 64amps @2350w and i'd not gone to the stop on the throttle.

This should really give the FS some grunt..........if needed.

No need for full throttle, but the weight if the packs and larger motor was very appreciated. I did the first flight or two with a DLE 30cc, two heavy batts strapped to the sides of the engine mount, and still one pound plus in lead screwed to the firewall!

With the G160 and the 10s it looks like its not far off balancing but that brings me to another headache.
Does the cg measurement come from the slat or from the leading edge of the wing. The instructions look like its from the slat.

Has anybody had any luck with the customer service at Black Horse? I've sent several emails and used the contact form on the website without getting any replies.

I'm in need of a RH elevator, or just the top and bottom covering. Mine was damaged during shipping. Any crashed Storches out there that could help?

Thanks!

BH doesn't reply to any email unless its from the Shop / Distributors I have found.

Also when your ready to balance is Use 115mm from the leading edge of the Slat it flies very well with that...

Thank you! I've been reading whatever threads I can find on it and there seems to be a lot of confusion about the CG.

Hi I wonder the same , I have one that is build not to far away so I will try to check with the owner. , the original CG is to far back (115mm from leading edge on the fuselage, I think that they want to have it from the wing it self or the slots .
best regards
Tomas
