House of Balsa 1/2A Stealth Sport --> EP?

Hi, i'm an intermediate level glow pilot and am looking for a small, cheap, and moderately aerobatic EP plane as my first electric project. I was wondering if anyone has converted the House of Balsa 1/2A Stealth Sport kit to electric power. I would imagine that it has been attempted before and was just wondering if anyone had any feedback to offer me on the topic or any other kits to suggest.

Thanks,
MiL

**EDIT** I should also mention that I would like a plane that can be flown in a relatively confined area. I'm hoping to fly at the elementary school about a block from my house. There is a baseball diamond with a sizable field next to it, i think it should be ample room for a reasonably small and slow flying model.

Mil, Welcome to the Ezone! I can't comment on the Stealth kit as I have no personal experiance with one. It should work out quite well if given enough power. How big is the plane and how much is it supposed to weigh when finished? This will help us to make suggestions on the power source.

Here is the Stealth Sport page on Tower's website: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...1&I=LXM401&P=0

And here is the HoB page: http://www.mag-web.com/rc-modeler/hobnew/12a.html with pretty much all the same info.

It's an all balsa, elevator and aileron controlled plane.

the basic stats are:
wingspan: 32"
Wing area: 252 in.^2
Wt. with radio 18 to 22 oz.
Wing loading 11.5 oz./sq. ft
Engine reqd. .049 Dragonfly or Blackwidow

Here's a pic

The other thing i'm considering is maybe a plane large enough that i would not have to buy micro servos and reciever but that is still within the 6-8 cell range.

Thanks again,
MiL

I would not reccomend the stealth as an aerobatic model. it is not powered enough unless you use more than a spd.400 it would fly, pretty nicely also, but it would not be aerobatic. with a Speed 480 it would make a great plane tho!

This plane is hell on wheels with an .049 in it, but you'll have to make come concessions to get performance out of it. The Stealth is one of those lightly loaded airplanes that 'flies' rather than muscles and hustles around the sky. She's a real sweetheart!

The original is intended for standard servos etc., but it also had a reed valve .049 motor with an integral tank. The motor helped make it possible to have big, cheap radio gear and still have a light wingloading. You will want to use S-80 servos (under $20), a Rocket 400 with a 2:1 gearbox, 8-4 to 8-6 prop and a 15-20A speed control.

With 252 sq. in., you could afford to be pretty heavy but the lighter the better. You could get great vertical if you kept it under 16oz, but even 20 wouldn't be heavy.

You'll be learning to build differently with electrics too. Since there's no vibration or oil, you can build much lighter and with less glue and still have a very strong airframe.

Have Fun!
