RMRC FPV Fest 2014 - Event Wrap-up

Three days of first-person-view madness.

RMRC FPV Fest 2014

Chalk up a win for Readymaderc and FPV

The first annual RMRC FPV Fest is in the books and it couldn't have gone smoother. Pilots from all over North America descended on Willard, Ohio for three days of FPV sortees around Willard airport (8G1), a 4000-foot paved strip with plenty of room to explore; a NOTAM was issued for the airport and we had full reign of the NAS around 8G1 as it was closed to full-scale traffic for the weekend. Although the weather played tricks on us the entire weekend, the overall vibe was great, and everyone remained relatively dry.

Friday was sunny and unseasonably warm for the beginning of fall, with temperatures around 90 degrees. The winds were up around 15 mph and made for some bumpy fpv flights for the fixed-wing pilots; the multirotors fared much better. Huge thunderstorms began to form in the late afternoon and a severe thunderstorm watch and then a warning was issued for Willard. Luckily, the main storm missed us to the south, with a brief bout of hard rain moving in after midnight. But that didn't stop the night operations from rolling through the evening as Readymaderc owner Tim Stanfield brought out the brand-new Anaconda twin-boom pusher equipped with a FLIR camera. With 10,000mAh of juice onboard, the Anaconda could fly for nearly an hour at cruise speeds, land under the cloak of darkness, switch batteries and take off again for another "mission". The FPV ground-pounders were out as well, running up and down the runway and weaving around the campsites and pits.

Saturday saw low clouds with an on and off misting of light rain that lasted throughout the day until around 4pm when it finally broke, revealing gorgeous evening skies and zero wind. There were enough breaks in the wet stuff for FPV pylon racing and LOS combat (except for IBCrazy who flew combat under the hood). Despite the limitations of the frequencies, the pylon racing heats went very well; only one instance occurred when a 1258MHz tx swamped a 1280MHz that was operating on a higher output wattage. If you've never seen four mini quadcopters take off at once and race FPV around a course at speeds near 50mph, I'll tell you its quite a site indeed. Saturday night saw a raging campfire at show center, and plenty of FPV night flights and ground poundin' action.

The first annual RMRC FPV Fest was capped at 50 registered pilots. A frequency board was utilized to keep everything flowing smoothly. Each pilot was given a magnetic name badge that he/she placed on the frequency board. When your turn came up, you retrieved the frequency lanyard, giving you permission to run your video transmitter and fly. Fifteen minutes was allotted for each flight, and the RMRC "air boss" let the pilot know when his turn was finished and the next pilot was up. There was very little backup on the frequency board and everyone had many chances to fly throughout the event. For safety, pilots were reminded not to turn on their transmitters in the pits unless they had the frequency lanyard, and for the most part, everyone adhered to the rules.

Judging by the attitude of all pilots and the way it ran, RMRC FPV Fest 2015 will be even bigger and better. A big thanks goes out to the town of Willard, Ohio and the Willard airport for having us.

In Memoriam

A sad note from the RMRC team: Among all the fun and excitement of FPV Fest 2014, there was one event that occurred that broke all our hearts. On Friday September 5, the airport manager of the Willard Airport, Dick Chambers, passed away. Dick, a close friend and mentor of our employee Alec Strong, passed away after attending the fly-in on Friday. Dick had been excited about the fly-in. If there is anything positive out of this, it is that he was able to spend much of his final day with us enjoying what he loved and had been looking forward to.

Without Dick's help, this event would not have been possible. Our hearts and prayers go out to Dick's family and friends, including Alec who stayed through the rest of the show after losing such a good friend.

Thanks, brother! You definitely have the throw down now. You were launching much straighter than I do.

It may be sooner than you think...
I have been on the phone with the Tuscarawa's County Chamber of Commerce just this afternoon

We are looking at a development about 1 hour from Parma
If all goes well, I might possibly be up for a day trip within the next month or two!
