Any instructiontions out there on making non rotating can/cdrom motors?

I've read a lot of threads about making your own rotating can/cdrom type motors. But has anyone made or knows of s site with instruction on making your own rotating shaft motors? eg, mega, mpjet ect.
I have a lathe and a small foundry where I can cast aluminum. I conceive of this project as casting the body of the motor and the end bell(s) and finishing the raw casting on the lathe. However, I don't know how the innards are constructed or if even as a DIY it can be done. In a related thread I am told that I need and iron ring in the body, and casting iron or steel is beyond my foundry! I also assume that the windings are in the body and the rotator are magnets. I also assume that the complexity of making the windings in the body may not be able to be DIY so that's why everyone build rotating can motors. Or for that matter, can it be that a rotating can motor be configured so that the rotating can be outputted to a rotating shaft?
