Thumbkin100
It's not powered, or likely to be really soon, but I put together a little 4" WS profile Thumbkin in depron. It is wonderfully cute, and a great little glider. It has spurred me on to both finish Thumbkin400 and get me some more kit for the really tiny stuff

Ok thanks for the update maybe a day when the snow gets ice on it you could use as a protective layer for the balsa wood and electronics so they don't warp and fry. When you land do you catch it or just fly it down on the grass?

I've followed this thread from is beginning and have been hesitantt o post because so many people were doing things that were beyond my capability. But I give in. Here is my Thumbkin inspired "micro" plane. The only unique thing about it is that is ROG, or at least roll off gym floors.
Five inch wings plan, Deltang Rx, Mini Vapor motor with scratch built 3:1 gear drive, and a flying weight of 5.75 grams with a 25mah battery. Flight time is 3 to 4 minutes depending on throttle use.

Micro Funkin Video
I finally got a calm enough day to get some video of the 2.75 inch Funkin. I'm afraid my action camera does not have quite enough lens to really capture this small model but if you view the video full screen you should be able to get an idea of how it flies. Because of the small size of the model the camera distorts the flying speed quite a lot. It's actually not as fast or erratic as the camera makes it look. There were some bugs flying past the camera during the flight sometimes making it difficult to tell the bug from the model in the video. I got a laugh out of that.

Wow! That was a great flight, Ralph! I'm so impressed that you have got it trimmed out so well, with that high wing loading. I would be very interested in some of the parameters, like motor right- and down-thrust angles, wing incidences rel to hor stab, right bias on the fin, CG.

I have said it before and I think this model demonstrates again that there is more than wing loading that determines a successful flyer . I think too much emphasis is placed on wing loading. I have the motor set with about 1.5 degrees of down thrust and no right thrust. The wing incidences relative to the stab are right off of your plan or at least as close as I could replicate them. The CG is also as close to the plan as I could get it. There is no rudder offset and it flies with neutral trim. With the battery mounted on the right side of the fuselage the lateral balance is skewed significantly to the right. I had to add a very small counter weight on the left wing tip to get it flying straight but the bias is still heavily to the right even with the counter weight. With enough counter weight to balance the battery the model would turn left as severely as it had been turning right without it. I'm thinking about building a built up fuselage version and on that one I would expect to need right thrust and or the rudder offset since the lateral balance would be neutral. Ralph |
