800mm Alula clone wing made from asphalt shingle

Ha ha. Not really. Black epp looks like asphalt though.
I'm in china and got this Alula like plane kit for 80rmb ($13) from www.taobao.com.
I have been flying about 4 years but never done a glider and I moved to a new part of china and didnt have anything with me except my transmitter and a receiver. So ordered this kit, a couple servos and lipo batteries and stuck this glider together with some shoe glue and hot glue. Made hinges out of vinyl notebook. I used shoe contact cement to glue in spars as it stays flexible but holds well and will not shatter when flexing or hit. I have doinked this glider on its nose many times and it just bounces. The spars in the fuse are definitely necessary and functional

Went together in about 3 hours. Didnt even cover the wing or fuse. Mounted the rx upside down to protect the wires and had to put some coins under the battery for counterweight.
Boy what a kick this glider is. I maidened it yesterday. Went to the football field here and after a couple of glide tests, sidearmed it up. Beautiful.
I can only throw it about 15 meters high but spent another hour today and I was sweated out and sore. What a thrill this flatland gliding thing is.
Don't know what it weighs but feels like nothing. 6 gram servos, no covering. Put single spars in top of wing and the balsa elevons are doing great.
Yesterday the grass was wet and the epp was soaking up the water so plane got heavier but still flew.
Did some catches which is surprisingly easy.

Always something new to learn in the rc world.

Ha. Nice looking plane. Thought about using asphalt shingle once but the stuff seamed heavy so I had to click and see.

After seeing how well they flew off our old home in Oklahoma, I gotta think they would glide pretty well. I read about a student project to make and fly a concrete plane, it didn't fly well though.
This glider probably doesn't fare anywhere near as well as a real Alula but yeah, it looks pretty good, it flies pretty well and it was cheap. I figure it will allow me to develope a feel for side arming a glider in the sky then if I keep liking it will get a better one. Thanks for looking.

Oh man, hope your home didn't get hit by a tornado or something. Haven't heard of that concrete plane before. Sounds like something engineering students would come up with just to prove a point. Can't tell if you have an airfoil on there or not but it def looks like it will be fast. Post some video if you get a chance.

Wow, you nailed it: engineering students trying to make really light concrete. Here is link: http://gizmodo.com/believe-it-or-not...lies-499936638

That was my old home, sold years ago and now fallen down. Small town life in a tornado alley.

This kit provided airfoiled wing. I burned out my radio and one of the servos wires and have to wait to get to my rc gear which is being shipped right now. Will make a video when I get things going again.
