yanq (aka yet another novice question)

Hi guys,

I am totally novice in the field.
I am ordering an ss and two 7 1400 KAN NiMh packs.
Of course I am thinking in the future to try Lipo packs
but for now I just want to be able to fly

I think the most important factors for a charger
are (in the order of importance):
- how fast and how many concurrent packs charging
- doing also lipos (although I have no idea what I'll need in the
future)

And here are the choices that I end up with:

1. GP Triton DC (http://www.hobby-warehouse.com/grpltrdccope.html)
OK everyone says that it is a really cool charger but:
how much more should I have to pay in order to be able to charge
at home? (can I get something from RadioShack)
How can I calculate the AMPS required?
Can I charge more that one pack at the same time?
Can I connect it (SAFELY) in the lighter jack in my car for
field charging?
I am not planning to use lipos for now and I have the
sense that when I'll need lipos in the future I might
end up with packs that will not be able to be charged by Triton
(perhaps bigger)

2. Hobbico QTF (http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/hob...ii_2581744.htm)
cheap, but lacks of features. Does not cycles batteries
(I am not sure whether I'll need that. Cycling batteries
is it that important?) The cool thing about this is that
I can charge two packs at a time.

3. Wattage PF-12
(http://www.hobby-warehouse.com/watpfparflye.html)
can charge two at a time, includes the AC adapter!!!
but does only NiMh

Sorry for the message length.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!!!!!!

Please, go with the Triton - you will not regret it! It is foolproof as far as charging goes - and for the immediate future it is as good as it gets - the cheap alternatives CANNOT hope to deal with everything you throw at them. If you win the lottery buy a Schulze and an Astro 109 - but the Triton WILL be ideal for your purpose.

Cheers, Phil

Thanks!!!
Is there a way to charge two packs at the same time with a triton?
And how many AMPS should my AC to DC converter should be for the
triton?

In certain cases, perhaps, but in general, no.

To power your Triton, I just bought a Cosel power supply off of Ebay.
$25 and includes shipping. Its 12 volt and 13 amps. Thats more than
enough to power your Triton. I bought it to power my Triton.
The person selling these has a few of them up for sale on ebay.

Hi Mutron,
My vote on the mentioned chargers would be for the Triton.
You will enjoy the capabilities of that charger. A few thoughts;
You will never have enough chargers.
If you have a charger capable of charging more than one battery at a time you will sooner or later screw up on which one is on which port.
You will never have enough chargers.
You will never regret spending the money for a higher quility unit.
You will never have enough chargers!

Chargers I presently have;
Aristo-Craft CG 325 - Ni-Cad - I've had for many years (good)
FMA Super Nova - Ni-Cad, Ni-Mh & Pb (good)
Dymond Super Turbo - Ni-Cad & Ni-Mh (good)
HECO Lithium Solution - Li-Po, Up in smoke after about 16 charges (Bad)
Astro 109 - Li-Po (good)

I think you will be happy with the Triton.
Did I mention you will never have enough chargers?

I think I'll go with the Triton. And now the question is what about AC to DC
converter? I have seen that people have been adding fans to the Cosel Power Supply 13 Amps or the Astroflight PS. Do you want to do that. Also the boxes (cosel and astroflight) seems to be component boxes. Is it safe to have them lying around
like this or I need to put them in an enclosure box.

thanks!
