Index of Tips, Tools and Techniques

There's a real wealth of tips, tools and techniques here on RC Groups and elsewhere, and it seems I stumble on one almost every day. Trying to find them again when I need them is another story, even with browser bookmarking. Happily, there are a few compendium threads that allow folks to post their best tips, tools and techniques, but again, searching them can be frustrating.

As an attempt to make the many tips, tools and techniques described on RC Groups and elsewhere more readily available, I've started to compile the following index of links. So far, I've gone through the “Best Building Tip You Ever Got” and “The Tools Money Can't Buy” threads (up in the Scale Kt/Scratch Built forum) and extracted the good stuff, and included material from elsewhere on the web as well. It's just a start though, so if you see a useful tip, tool or technique while browsing, please post the link here and I'll roll it into the index.

To make it easier to keep track of additions, I'll post new tips in red font for a week or so after they've been added.

Happy building!

Steve

What COG should I use?

I'm rebuilding a very old sport plane. I'm finished except I have no clear idea of where the COG should be so I can balance the plane before the maiden flight. How do I figure out where I should start with the COG?

Thanks,

Hey rcers,

I haven't built the Sundancer, but having seen photos of it, I'd recommend some 1/16" sheet balsa in the two wing root rib bays, and then some 2" fiberglass tape epoxied over the joint.

Just to add my 2 cents, the technique mentioned for making holes in balsa using sharpened brass tubing also works great on foam. No need to cut teeth into the brass, I just sharpen the inside edge with a hobby knife. For the smaller sizes, I chuck the tube into my elecric drill and it makes quick and clean holes, in balsa or foam.

As a cutting tool. I took one of the Xacto thin, fine saw blades (approx. 1 x 4") and using a dremel with the cut off grinding wheel, cut off the strong back of the saw for a couple of inches. Gives a thin saw that can be used to cut deeper than the strong back allows and also allows for making flush cuts using a little of the flex of the blade.

Micro-Mark has a number of specialty cutting tools, including a flexible razor saw with no back. Personally, I like these:
