Should any 328p work for xloader
I keep getting upload failed (without anything happening)
ohh is 57600 baud rate the problem perhaps?

switched to avr8 burn o mat
still having issues with settings i think

No not any.I think you chose the wrong settings.
You should choose the one with lower baudrate.
On your setup you need programmer and avr dude gui like avr8.
XLoader working with FTDI if have bootloader on serial pins.
Those above are programming pins not normal serial pins.

Not sure i understand correctly, you mean the module bay tx/rx pins, instead of isp header?
i was using this method, assuming it was loaded with a bootloader, sccamp loaded the latest when he shipped it ... (bootloader maybe not?)

not sure where to set baud rate for avr8

The RX TX uploading is not for your board .........is for arduino(promini or nano from market). The right programming (for your board)is with avr programmer like USBASP and and avrdude gui like avr8.No need bootloader on steve boards. They are programmed directly (ISP header)..NO BOOTLOADER.
No need set baud rate for avr. programming. How you flashed hex code before ?What is changed?
I think how you connect the 10pins connector over 6 pins not good,You need an adapter 10 pin to 6 pin ISP ....or identify pins and using wires.

I had the impression you know hot to program these boards.

ok

edit ....fuses read!!! that worked
i had my dial cover on the opposite side so really it was at 6 oclock instead of 12

no its the switch itself i think theres only one direction the cover can go
guessing 0 is supposed to be at 6 o'clock?
