Great Planes Sukhoi SU-31

...it's now in stock...

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXFKS0&P=7

...an ARF for $119.99 - recommended motor is the Kontronik Fun 400-36 w/4.2:1 gear drive - $247.99...Smile 30-6-12 ESC - $99.99...and they're recommending a Great Planes 8 cell 2000 mAh NiMH custom pack...

...the plane looks interesting - would this be a good 3D setup?...

...they're claiming an AUW of 26oz. for the Sukhoi - can someone tell me what the thrust should be on the above setup?...

I don't know the thrust off the top of my head, but if you want unlimited vertical with 26oz. auw and be able to hang on the prop with the speed 400 you would definitely want a gear ratio of 6:1 or 7:1 at least for the amount of weight. What is the wing loading? If you want to do harriers and other slower maneuvers and still be able to do snaps and stuff then you want a low wingloading like 5oz sqf or something similar. I don't know about you, but isn't it that pretty heavy for a 3D plane to do true 3D manuevers! But hey its all in what you like.

...at 555 sq. in. of wing area, it comes out to 6.75 oz./sq. ft...

...i want all out 3D performance - i was hoping the recommended power system would develop 35-40 oz. of thrust...but maybe not...plus it's kinda pricey...

If you can find a setup with that type of thrust for this plane you may have found a good plane, but like I said all out you want a wing loading of 5oz/ sq ft or less. Maybe try these shockflyers or the Revolutionary EPP model. Kits, but this is what they are meant for.

I`d use the same power system as the Attitude..Mega 16/15/4 and Astro 3.3-1 gearbox

I looked at the Suhkoi..it looks nice up close..it does not seem that heavy

I looked through the instructions and they are using Futaba rx and servos and a nimh battery. Also had heavy hardware compared to what most of us use. It also has landing gear. Therefore I seriously doubt with proper gear (HS55, Berg, lipos) that it would weigh that much. Also you can 3d anything given proper power. The TOC planes were 30-50 pounds and I think are really what developed 3D and made it popular.

bcripe,
is right anything given power will go. anything with power made for 3D will do 3D it is just what you want to do with it. I have a 16 oz. airplane with a 6:1 gear ratio speed 400 and with a bigger prop so that it gets thrust and not so much speed and it has unlimited vertical. Its all in how much you want to spend and what you like.

I also should have said that the aircraft must be optimized for 3D. Its pretty hard to do 3D with a Ultrasport or Kaos ;-)

the motor is not just a brushed speed 400 . Its a good quality brushless 400. the only thing I'd chage immediatly would be the battery pack, get some higher voltage lipos ( 3s) and make sure they can handle a lot of amps and you're good!

hmm....

I was looking at those for some time now.
They look very interesting, even more interesting when you go to Hacker-Models website, a czech rc planes manufacurer
http://www.hacker-model.cz/news/extra.htm

this are side to side comparison:

Looks to me like Great Planes and Hacker-Models have some kind of alliance as the SU-31 looks alot like Chaos...
I have been trying to order a Chaos directly from czech with no luck. I filled the registration form and never got the email back with my login and password (necessary to place an order). SIG which imports some of the Hacker line of models does not have one in stock (at least not on their website)

ps. no harm intended (rip-off design etc.) just posting what i have found

It looks like a nice plane, just have to find out the thrust ratio for the setup you want and hopefully that is over 26 oz. becuase that is supposed to be the auw.

Does look similar, but I remember when the Great Planes first came out there was alot of talk about it being a copy of another one (Can't remember now). These two are definitely manufactured the same way, the landing gear and motor mounts are exactly the same.

it was the extreme team's Sukhoi 3D, for an identical looking plane at a much lighter weight you can build one from
depron and some balsa with the plans available here for free

I picked-up one of the GP Sukhoi's SU-31's yesterday and built it last night. The build was OK, a couple of places the manual could be better for someone who hasn't worked with foam and depron before.

I used the power system from my SA Groove 480, a Hacker B20-15L 4.4:1, APC 11x5.5 e-Prop, Hacker 18amp ESC and 3P1S TP 2100 battery pack. Also used a Berg 5-channel RX and some of the smaller BlueBird servos.

AUW is 24oz. My Hacker puts out makes about 36oz of thrust at 17amps. So thrust to weight is 1.4 or so, and wing loading is around 6.2. Not great, but enough to be fun! When the new 10C TP packs are available I will push the Hacker to about 24amps and get almost 2:1 thrust to weight!!!

I hope to maiden the SU-31 tonight (if I can sneak out of work early!!)

Later All

Brian
