Voith tug - Crowley Guard


Ok, here we go!
I saw this tug heading out in the Alameda estuary when we were heading back to port in our sailboat. We always give way to the commercial traffic with lots of tugs and container ships sharing the waterway.
Seeing this particular tug was new to me, and the fact that it was traveling backward made me curious. What also made me curious was that I had never seen a tug this big on S.F. bay!

So, after about 2 years of waiting for Graupner to find a way to start production of their voith drives, and an equal amount of time looking for a decent sized fiberglass hull (I would have built my own, but this is so much easier)... I came across a reclusive Canadian by the name of Gary King. Gary, by the way, makes very nice hulls and knows more than anyone how to properly build a voith setup.

I picked up a copy of his Foss voith hull. It's close enough for my needs, so here we go!

The hull looks great, the few minor blemishes can be easily fixed. My biggest concern is the seam as it does not appear to be very strong. I added a single layer of fiberglass along its length.
I added a second and third layer at the center in front of the skeg.
After this cured, I flipped the hull over and filled voids in the seam with 20 minute epoxy.
Hopefully, future progress will be more impressive

Gary is a friend and yes, he does good work and knowledgable about the drives on these boats. Have several photos of this boat if needed that I took of the sisiter ship in Annacortes. Looks like you have the drives centered too far back twords the mid ships area and not far enough forward. Or are you going by the Foss drawings Gary provides ( I have one of these built as well).?

Yes, I would love to have copies of your drawings!

I'm betting you are right about the drive centers. The marks were placed based on the scribe lines on the hull, but I have yet to check the dimensions to see if they are accurate. I got a little ahead of myself last night

After comparing photos of the boat, I discovered several hull modifications, one is a large circular shaped transom extension. I figure this is as good a place as any to start, so I measured and fabricated the piece from .040 plastic sheet.

Sanded the hull seam with 80 grit using the random orbital, then faired the bow with bondo. This morning I broke out the rotary cutter and using a ball bearing veneer bit, trimmed the top. It was a bit of work trying to finesse the tool around! It may look a little inconsistent, but it will all be hidden inside the bulwark later.

Cutting up the stern for the rollers. Nothing is being permanently installed yet, I'm still researching how these parts go together. I have a photo fragment that shows diagonal braces holding the top roller, but not much more.

Nice work Vince. I was wondering if the Bondo you are using is the 2 part stuff used in car repair?

I'm eager to see how you will attach the main deck to the hull

Yep, the two part stuff. It sets up quick and cures nice and hard.

Me too! I've got a profile gauge that will be very useful to template the deck. The outside areas will be fixed to 1/2" birch beams fiberglassed to the inside with the deck house opening framed.

Ok i can get you copies of the Foss boat drawings he supplies, but nothing on the Crowley. Looking good as you noticed there are differences in the hull for the Protector Class.
