Gap Seals On Solid Core Wings

Which DLGs with solid core wings benefit from gap seals, which don't, and which may even be adversely affected?

My Vandal from Hell has tape gap seals, and it is quieter with them than without.

More info from others in the Arrow 5 thread

SuperFr3aKs and NXTs will not benefit from gap seals. My testing actually showed that it hurts the performance a bit.

I liked it on my Helios and XX LITE. Added a slightly noticeable increase in launch heights, but I never verified that observation with an altimeter.

The gap seals on my Chili helped quite a bit. The launch was more quieter and maybe 3~4m increase in height...

Chili is hollow, isn't it?

Anyone have any experience with putting gap seals on a Stobel? Help or hurt launch or handling?
(hmmm... Maybe I should ask Ryan's secretary)

They are very easy to do. Try seals and see.

Better, try them on one side only.

Jun runs gap seals on his Stobels:

I'd be interested to see how it's done. Never could get them to lay flat on the long span of a wing even at rest on my bagged wings unlimited ships. Plus in the air who knows what is happening? Works well on an unlimited rudder like my Pike Perfect though.

The Stobel is hollow-core, and needs gap seals, which applies to all wings of similar construction.

The Polaris solid-core, but the gap is app. 1/8" wide, and needs to be sealed.

Maybe folks with other solid-core planes (Helios, Fr3aks, etc.) will chime in. My Zone V2 wings don't seem to need them.

Why does it matter if it is hollow or solid core?

Unless I am missing something they are both sealed front and back of the hinge line.
(Other than the small hole for the pushrod/RDS shaft)

Taping a thumb drive sized camera to the wing would show very quicly how well the gap seals were laying down in flight.

I think hollow wings tend to be more susceptible to leakage than solid core wings. They can certainly be noisy if not well sealed.

Solid core has a narrow slot which restricts air motion. Hollow molded has a much larger cavity. It is easier for flow to progress spanwise, and easier for flow to form a little vortex in the channel. The flow will be somewhat different for the two cases.
