HKPilot Mega 2.5.2 Master Set

Hobbyking's master set includes everything to create a fully autonomous aircraft or FPV flyer

HKPilot Mega

A complete APM-based kit at a reasonable price

The HKPilot Mega is an affordable autopilot system modeled after the 3DRobotics APM open-source project. The HKPilot has all the same features of the APM 2.5 at a fraction of the cost. Additionally, with the introduction of the 3DRobotics PixHawk, the price of an APM-based board has dropped considerably. But don't let the "old technology" myth sway you, there are plenty of APM 2.5 boards still being produced and used effectively; their processing power and reliability is excellent.

The HKPilot Mega master set comes with a power sensor and BEC module, a Minim OSD for FPV operations, a Ublox LEA-6h GPS, either 433MHz or 900Mhz telemetry radios, and cases for the controller, GPS, and radios.

What's included in the master set?

  • HKPilot Mega 2.5.2
  • Power sensor and BEC Module ( XT-60 connectors)
  • Minim OSD v1.1
  • Ubox super precision LEA-6h GPS
  • Telemetry radios (433MHz)
  • Cases for the flight controller, Telemetry radios, GPS with pedestal mount
  • Complete matched cable set

I wonder if you can install and external compass like the 2.5.

Edit: it looks like you can. After zooming in on the pic it has the same tracks you need to cut with a knife in order
to use external compass.

Cut tracks?! Thought you could enable/disable an external compass through mission planner?!

Saves about $30 over individual major items. Plus cables, APM case and GPS pedestal which do not appear to be available separately.

Good value in my book.

Also take a look at the Mini version of the HK APM2.52 if you just need the flight controller.

It is always the case where I buy something and then a better deal comes along hahaha.
This looks like a good deal and comes with the 10hz GPS too.

Agreed. For all the items, including the cases, this is a deal.

I've just bought this and am impatiently waiting for delivery to the UK!

Am I right in saying that the onboard compass will not be disabled simply by plugging in the LEA-6H, and that I will DEFINATELY need to cut the tracks to the onboard compass??

Cheers, Paul.

The Lea-6H doesn't have a compass on it though so you'll actually NEED the onboard one...

No you don't. I have built a few now and will not use the onboard compass.
Having the external one is much more accurate.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the inaccuracy of the internal compass was usually due to interference and many times could be remediated by careful placement of the electronic components? Is that simply not true?

Paolo was referring to the fact that the included GPS does not include an external compass so for this kit the internal compass must be used.

You do not have to use the on board compass this is why there is an option in the Mission Planner to use an external one. The external one is only a few bucks and is a lot more accurate if you keep it away from batteries, wires etc.
WheresWald0 that is true but when your stuck for space and if the control unit has to be center it can be difficult. It is much easier to make a post out of plastic and have it up out of the way from everything.

The compass on the black post is one I just done for a customer. A cap screws on over it.

I'll try again - the GPS module does not have an inbuilt compass

The internal compass will have to be used unless you connect an external compass - you'll have to buy this separately…

Example GY-273-HMC5883L-3-Axis-Digital-Compass-Module

Valkman, Can you recommend how to mount an external compass like you show in conjunction with the provided Ublox LEA-6h GPS? Can I mount it somehow on the provided GPS pedestal mount or GPS case?
