Old Balsa - Help

Today I acquired an old model, flown in 1972 at the Nationals. The covering had been removed, so the delightful complex structure was visible. The balsa seems to be very brittle -- the glue seems OK, just the balsa is very, very brittle. It breaks awful easy, and I do not think it will survive the shrinkage of covering materials.

Does anybody know how to remedy this situation so the structure might be useable again?

Thanks,

Marion

How about a coat of paint on the frame. It may saturate the wood, and "glue" all the loose particles that make it brittle, together and strong again. This is just a guess, or suggestion, if your interested.

My uncle gave me a 40 ytear old guillows plane, a rib shattered into pieces when I cut the first notch out, I had a fresh blade too.
