Build Log

BBCC4 Earl Stahl's Stinson 125 Voyager

As part of the BBCC4 Contest:

I'm going to build Earl Stahl's Stinson 125 Voyager, from Outerzone.

The design, at 100%, is a 31-inch span. I'm considering enlarging the span to 36-inches, and keeping the wood sizes as called out in the drawing, for a lower wing loading (and slower flight).

OK! Life proceeds. I got several copies of the plans printed and set up my table to begin the fuselage sides.

Looks good, David. I've built a 36" Fairchild 24 and a 30" Hawker Hurricane from Earl's plans. You'll enjoy this build!

It does look very pretty in the 3-views - best of luck for a light wind model!

Terrell's Law of Inertial Dampening, which states that "Nothing will move before its time" is facilitated by using the Devo Motorik Inversion "You got to pin it, before you whip it."

Pin it! Pin it good!

I remember Devo, but I always preferred the B-52s. The girls were cuter.

Fuselage base structure is framed up. Added supports for servos, electronics and battery. I'm going to rig the fuselage before adding the formers and stringers.

It's pretty hard to get everything at right angles like that.

I've learned that using a razor saw and miter box helps a great deal. If the ends of the cross braces are cut clean, it's much easier.

I also cut a couple of temporary bulkheads from Dollar Tree 5mm foam board, inserted them at the 30- and 60% fuselage stations, securing them with large rubber bands. They jig the sides up until I can get the first cross pieces placed.

It's still not perfect, with local variations in longeron density causing differences in curvature radius between the wide-spaced frames. But, there are still some partial frames and stringers to add that will hide the discrepancies under the aircraft skin.

I need a better building board.
The one I have is size-limited, being that it was the straightest cork bulletin board I could find.
What I would really like is either one of those 4 foot long balsa building boards or a metal one that you use magnets to assemble.
The 4 ft long balsa ones are continuously out of stock, in fact, I don't know why they even still list it if they can never stock them.
The metal ones, I need to just collect the magnets for and then get a good flat sheet of probably 1/4" steel, so that it won't bend easily. Then a coat of white paint to resist rusting on me.
