elec system to replace .46 glow

I know very little about elec. power (and also little about glow but have learned to fly trainer with it. ) I have a hi wing trainer built for glow to convert. (seagull model Rising Star) ws 63 inn. wing area 659 Weight without motor or batts - 5.2 lbs. Take off from grass in lite to mod winds, fly mostly circuits and touch and go's, New to the hobby and too old to spend all my time tryiing to understand all this. Would like assistance on set-up. Can anyone tell me which motor, sp. c. and batt set up would allow me 10 to 12 min flts. with this set up? Price not a concern, reliable system is. Any help you can give this ol' feller would be appreciated.

I'd suggest an AXI 4120/18 on 5S LiPo's capable of 40 amps discharge. Use around a 13-14'' prop and you'll have a very capable airplane.

Any specific recomendations on the batteries? I've got a Telemaster .40 I want to convert, but at these price points, I don't want to guess.

I'd also like to use the same power system to convet a Kyosho Sterman or similar ARF.

I'm converting a Kyosho P40 using a 412018, 13x8prop Jeti 75amp controller and 20 x GP3300cells, all up weight will be 7+lbs and I have no idea if it will fly any good but we'll soon find out!

I have done a number of conversions in this size of model. I would suggest that you get a copy of E Calc or MotoCalc, fill in your model parameters and let one of these programs suggest possible motor/gear or direct drive/battery combinations. I have found these programs invaluable in making projections. Just guessing can be very expensive and not necessarily give you the best bang for your buck.

I don't like or trust motocalc predictions I find the predictions confusing and sometimes way off when you test in the real world.

I've tried on and off for over a year to use it and yes it does give you some good info, But I would rather use the info gathered from members and friends like here on E Zone to sus out a more proven setup.

I'm not saying that Motocalc or similar programs are no good, because in the right hands they can be a powerfull tool, but there are horses for courses and I'm just an old goat

Hi Joe,

Have you got any pics of the P40 for us?

Whats next for me? Finishing a part built PT-19 kit, and building some of the kits that sitting in the garage MFA -Islander, rebuild the Bubbles fuselage, SIG LT-25 as a camera plane...... and the list goes on

Should be a busy winter....

Heather, I hope to start posting a build along in the next week or so, I have everything except the retracts.

I am also planning a 84" Powerhouse old timer (I have a set of original wings,,,about 30years old anyway)but that project stalled because I wanted to build my own motor, but that stalled because the one I built didn't work, I started on a second motor but now the novelty has worn off,,,, maybe in another life

I crashed another plane today and as it was plowing into the giant gum tree I was thinking of what I can put the receiver and servos into,,,,,, problem is that the plane is stilll up there about 25m up! I can't get it down! Ya gotta laugh

I recently encountered a global f4u corsair at a dirt cheap price.
while waiting to put in the .46 slimer, I test weighed the plane with my Axi 2820/10. With the 10 cell pack the scales tipped 5-1/4 pounds.

My question is will a 2820/10 fly a 53" wingspan monster.
hobbylobby's site says it will fly a 5-1/2 pound plane with authority. Is that authority on the ground or will it really get my plane airborne.

I wish I had the guts to try but for now it flys fine with a 46 it just takes a long time to start compared to my nesail accord 47 with the axi bolted up front

has anyone tried anything similar??

zman, IMO I don't like your chances, if it was a glider or an old timer or a cub, I think it could work but not the warbird, wing loading too high.

I have successfully converted a .46 sized trainer to electric using an AXI 2820/12 and 14 cells with a 10 x 6 sport prop. It weighs in at 6.5 pounds and flies very well. It will stay up for about 8.5 minutes with some throttle management. Max amp draw as 29 amps. If you were to use lipos the time would be greatly increased probably with a decrease in weight.

I think the 2820 will be lacking for your plane, Zman. Should fly the Rising Star in the original post very well, though. Im about to convert a very similar airplane, World Models Sky Raider, using a 2820/10 and 3s2p Irate 2200 lipo packs.
