Question

Electra ARF - elevator pushrod help


I'm finishing up a Carl Goldberg Electra ARF and just discovered an issue with the elevator pushrod hitting the fuselage. I can get hardly any down elevator deflection. Here's a picture of the problem:



Should I cut the fuse side back or is there something I'm missing?

Just trim the control horn with a hobby knife to the lower hole that you arent using...

The pushrod is hitting the fuselage, not the control horn, correct?
Is the opening in the fuselage wide enough for the control horn and pushrod if it was moved to the left a little? If so, simply relocate the control horn. Take it off, fill the holes with CA, drill new ones over to the left a little, install it again.

Yes, it's the pushrod, not the control horn that is hitting. I don't think the opening is wide enough even if the horn is moved. It's almost touching the other side right now. Here's a very poor shot of how much clearance I have:

I would cut the fuselage - just the side where the pushrod is binding. Make it a circular cut, centered on the hinge point (where the pushrod passes through the control horn). A dremel sanding attachment should make short work of this.

Hi,

I'm helping a friend of mine build one of these. I offset the horn to one side to cure this problem. You can also just cut some balsa away to clear the rod. Both methods will work just as well. The Electra is a great plane. I learned to fly on one, and have taught many people to fly on one. Mine is about 20 years old and still kicking.

Ric and Andy,

Thanks for the replies. I ended up cutting a small cutout as Andy suggested.

What angered me just a little was that their instructions have you place the horn exactly in the spot that will cause this problem. It may have cleared if I'd shifted the horn a little, the back should be setup to have clearance for the pushrod if you center the horns, as they instruct.

Ah well, problem solved.

I had a similar problem with the kit version. I ended up removing material from the inside for the control link to move freely. There is NO slop in my elevator for sure. Andy's suggestion was also good.

This is a great plane. I just finished mine last year and have had a ball learning all about brushless motors and gearing. I started with the canned motor then upgraded to a Mega 22/20/3 direct drive with a 10x6 prop. This was a big improvement. However, I've now calculated some fascinating numbers in Motocalc to pull the 22/20/3 out and replace it with a geared Mega 16/25/3 2.5:1 motor turning a 14x9 prop...giving me twice the climb rate! I just hope the wings don't rip off when I let her go!

I'm building a Gentle Lady kit now and putting on a motor of my own. If I have the same problem, now I'll know how to fix it. I'm a few steps away from this step of construction and it seems that larger hole in the fuse is where the pushrod is supposed to come out...it must just be that they have the Electra set up sligthly differently than the Gentle Lady.

What's "a/c" stand for? I'm gonna add on either flaps or spoilers to my Gentle Lady sometime in the future. I also might play around with the motor setup...maybe a 400 with gearbox rather than current 600. Also, rather than the basic rubber band setup, I have mine go to one peg in the back but to fuse side pegs at front...i did this because I totally changed the hatch arrangement when making it so I could mount the electric motor. The way i will put on the bands will also hold down the hatch.

a/c stand for aircraft.

I'd like to see some pictures of the modifications you made if you are able. I also think a geared sp400 may be a great alternative. Lee is using a 16/15/X mega which is light as well. Mine does feel a little heavy at 45 oz with a geared Kyosho Endoplasma for power, but I'm happy with it for now.

I use a chameleon 550 from tower 19 turn, 3:1 gearbox 12X8 prop. 8x1300scr's
20 second climbout to altitude.....usually 8 climbouts per sortie
I have had over 40 min flights.
A/C stands for aircraft.....Sorry , I slipped back into my military jargon.
