Cool
Vintage Popular Mechanics 1964 Hydro
I found this link from another thread, lots of different model stuff in this article.
Starting on page 125 of this link is an article and plans for a 42" gas hydroplane, FYI. Uses a 3-3/4lb. Ohlsson & Rice motor, nice photos and drawings. http://books.google.com/books?id=mtw...page&q&f=false |

I have the plans for the White Heat 4-60 which is 36" long x 18" wide.I intend on building a larger version of it in the future and use a Zenoah 260 in it.

corilan, With getting the plans enlarged to build it around 45" I don't know if Octura's steerable strut would accept a large enough prop,if I could even find one for sale.I'd propably make something simular using a 7.5 outboard lower unit http://hyperprod.bizhosting.com/7_5_bullet_drive.html and making it into a steerable strut like the one pictured below. There are steerable struts available from a company but they are expensive.
I found plans on Ebay for the White Heat V but it has the front cockpit where the engine sits.I like the 4-60 because it has a rear cockpit and a round nose. The cowl should easily cover a Zen 260 and maybe even make it two piece for easy engine access. |

Good idea to convert an outboard lower end into a steerable strut(the Bullet drive seems perfectly suited for that). Saw pictures of the Octura hardware for the "White Heat" from an old auction: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedi...boat-142978666 http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedi...boat-134639555 A large quantity of vintage Octura parts was sold around 2011: http://www.worthpoint.com/inventory/...+&categoryurl= |

Octura used to make the steerable strut but I don't know if they still do or not.
I know of a guy who just scored a vintage boat that has an O&R engine in it and it does run. He fired it up indoors yesterday and smoked up his house. I don't think that his wife had any sense of humor about that, I know that mine doesn't! |

My boat was sold a few years back to someone in the St. Louis area.
The motor was a 1hp Octura conversion that I found new. I was trying to build it as close to original but had to vary in some areas. I had a steering strut but did not use it. Scratch built the exhaust from aluminum tubing. Looked neat with smoke coming out the pipes. Kind of miss the boat. Not an easy build. Steve Staples |
