FlySky FS-TH9X, Mods, ER9X, OpenTX

I've had my TH9X for a while, and enjoyed the OEM firmware..
Like many transmitters, the firmware can be the weakest link,
so, I finally broke down, modded it, and flashed a few new ones -
Lots of people rave about ER9X and Open9X/OpenTX,
so that was the order that I tried them..

My quick thoughts?

FlySky firmware is without a doubt 'the best' for a beginner!
IMO, it is also perfectly fine if only being used to fly multirotor crafts..
Sometimes - Simpler Is Better.

ER9X firmware - Definitely a step up, and kicked things up a notch..
More configurations, More settings, More 'in-depth' [for lack of better wording]
Programming takes a bit to figure out and get used to, but it's not bad..
Programming is mostly straight-forward, and still somewhat user-friendly.

Open9X aka OpenTX - Yet another step - But a step 'up'? I'm not sure..
It's another variant of ER9X, with many of the same features and then some..
It's an optimizeable setup that users can tweak depending on their setups..
Setups as in: Hardware, Firmware, Options, etc.
While the previous firmwares were somewhat straight-forward / user-friendly,
IMO, this one is not. While it offers the same features,
trying to figure out how to write them / use them is somewhat ridiculous..
Important/Simple things like 'throttle cut/hold' is not found..
It has be done by fumbling around with different settings and values..
The first time I figured it out and tried it out,
Throttle cut/hold actually triggered the motors to spin up full-tilt..
NOT good, NOT user-friendly, NOT straight-forward..
Other important/simple things like DualRate/Expo has become a headache too..
Instead of going to the screen, setting values to switches, and being done,
apparently different lines must be made/edited/written for things to work..
Annoying, Frustrating, And a few steps backwards IMO.

As of right now, I'm still fumbling around with things trying to dial in my setup[s]

User Guides/Manuals: I read through all of them, and IMO, they were a joke..
A firmware/program is no different than any other product..
If it exists, and people have to use it, there should be detailed instructions..
Not the case.
And, for someone just starting out, not knowing terminologies, etc..
I don't see them having much of a chance at figuring everything out
without a LOT of frustration, trial, and error..

Well, so much for "quick thoughts",
but I figured I'd touch down on as many points as I could think of..
I left out a bunch, but, if I added them, I'd need 2 more pages of space.

Now.. Onto some pics..

I took a few shots along the way while tinkering with the TX..
Some are needed mods, and others were just for fun. Enjoy -

Quick video-clip of my OpenTX splash-screen:

FlySky FS-TH9X OpenTX Custom Splash-Screen (0 min 9 sec)

Top = My DD logo
Sides = Skeletons
Bottom = Open-TX

After it loads, and goes to the main-screen,
you'll see my model set up for "simulator"..
[Thanks MikeFromGermany!]
Sim quads are the only quads I can fly here..
Gotta love NY winters and -zero degree temps.

Well, cabin-fever has been getting the best of me,
so I finally broke out.. I repaired my micro-X1,
took it out, and tossed it around the sky for a while..

What a blast!
And, amazingly, it was getting around 6 minutes of flight time per LiPo..
The last time it flew using them, the flight times were only around 3 minutes..
Interesting . . .

When I got back inside, I figured I'd get it all dialed in..
OpenTX Dual-Rate / Expo was a p.i.t.a. but I'm making progress with it now..

Oddly, this craft used to bind, calibrate, and fly perfectly with zero'd out trim..
Not this time.. I had to trim the living h**l out of it.. No clue why, but oh well..

Below are some of the settings:

1 pre flight settings - bad
2 post flight settings - good
3 ridiculous levels of trim
4 just a shot of the quad&tx

I had another idea for a TX mod
that I'll be doing as soon as I can get the cash for components..

The concept is based on the OEM TH-9X with the hard-wired-antenna/module -

Add two female-SMA-connectors to the TX..
1 up top at the OEM antenna location
1 at the top of the back of the TX

Single cable - Double ended -

This will allow for a broader range of antenna types to be used on the TX..

On the back-side..

No more antennas on the modules..

One more cable will be used here..
Male-to-male-SMA-connector [90 degree ends]

This will connect the module to the TX [antenna plug/wire]

For setups like the FrSky module [forward-facing-plug]
Another wire would be used. Still doubled ended SMA,
but one 90 degree end and one end straight -

Here's a visual that I Photoshop'd together -

Why must I keep finding things to force me to tinker?!

I was given a box of Microsoft X-Box parts, so I tore into a remote,
and removed both of the 'joysticks'. After some comparing,
it looks like they're set up just like the Sony PlayStation version..

If I'm right, I can eventually sit down and do a joystick-mod to the TX -

Interesting..

I was unable to use the joystick's micro-switch-function
to trigger an OEM toggle-switch on the 9X [Momentary]

But, I was able to get it to trigger an LED using 6 volts..

Joystick Switch (0 min 18 sec)

I guess it's back to the TX to try to figure this out..

I tore the 9X apart again, and re-tested the joystick micro-switch..
I wired 6v power and the LED using the same setup configuration.

Just as I thought - The joystick and switch are working 100%
So, the switch will kick on an LED, but, for some odd reason,
interfacing with the OEM 9X toggle switch[es] seems to be a problem..

9X TX X-Box Joystick LED Test (0 min 20 sec)

There hasn't been any magic smoke yet, so I'll still keep tinkering!

Another X-Box controller bites the dust..
This time, I tore it apart for the joysticks -

Quick n' dirty just to see how they'd feel..
The 9X stick thread size is M3, so to make things fit,
I nuked some little stand-offs to the bottoms of the sticks..
After that, just screwed them in place, and called it good.

UPDATE:

Companion - OpenTX Firmware upgraded to version 2.0.0

When I flashed from FlySky to ER9X, I had 'error issues'.
When I flashed from ER9X to Open9X/TX, I had 'error issues'.
When I flashed from OpenTX [old version] to OpenTX [new version aka 2.0]
everything worked flawlessly!

This time, models and settings were read from the TX & imported to the GUI,
The actual flash went start to finish with no errors, etc..

I am now able to import my models/sellings, and open them in the simulator
witch is now fully functional - unlike last time..

I even used the GUI to delete a model from my TX, and it worked perfectly!

There is a way to actually edit/program settings in the TX vis the GUI,
but I haven't figured that part out yet..
Not a big deal to me, but, it'd be interesting to see if/how it works out..

So far, I'm stoked that this new update has worked so nicely,
and can't wait to find out if any of the other glitches have been solved..

*Thumbs Up*

After getting two new [and better] LiPos for my quad,
I decided to modify the old one, and stash it in my TX..

No more burning through AAs like they're going outa' style!

what is the vibrator-motor for?

dagob,

The vibrator-motor gives the TX what's known as 'haptic feedback'.
Where the TX would normally just 'beep' - and you'd only hear it..
The motor will also make the TX vibrate - so you can feel it too..

Just like a cell-phone..

If you can't hear it, you'll feel it..

It was a nice mod to have.. Especially when a timer ran out,
and it was too noisy to hear.. the vibrating always got my attention.

SWR Reading On FSTH9X with DJT & OpenTX

Hello All,

I have the FSTH9X with a FRSKY DJT module running OpenTX (from an old IRIS+).

I am trying to home build some panel and biquad antennas and antenna analyzers, power meters, and SWR meters that go all the way up to 2.4GHz is extremely expensive. I have some analyzers, but they are only for VHF.

I know that the train is has a built-in SWR meter comma but I was wondering if there was anyway modify the OpenTX software to show SWR readings on the FSTH9X/Turnigy 9X. Not sure if there is some type of bi directional coupler built into the transmitters or not.

Or if anyone has an idea of how I can test the antennas, please comment.

Or if anybody knows a good source for a cheap bi directional coupler that will go all the way up to 2.4 gigahertz, also please comment.

Many thanks.
