Cat's out of the bag. So, I will ask for assistance.

I've managed to load a CD of microfilmed NAA images onto my Pictures file. I've even managed to burn a new CD from that one. However, it is not letting me post individual images from that file, here on this forum.

What I've got is a P-51B factory 3-view (period, but NOT the one found in the manuals) and fairly complete fuselage loft/ordinates charts. The latter include the radiator fairing /scoops (front and rear) and all interior radiator ducting etc.

These are the parts and assembly drawings from a single roll of 35mm film. They were, apparently, never part of the "official" film contracted by USAAF, and are not indexed.

About 2/3 is applicable to P-51D and same to P-51A fuselages.

Can anyone assist me in getting just the pertinent images posted here? I suppose I could try uploading the entire roll, but...???

Still working on getting loft images to load. Until then, I offer these phtos to begin a discussion about P-51D canopies (individual bubble shapes) AND Lou IV's famous/infamous/controversial paint scheme.

How many P-51D variants are shown in the series? How many different canopies are depicted?

How many different colors appear on Lou IV's upper surface as camouflage? what are they?

BTW- Lou IV has a different name appearing on the Rt side. IIRC, it's "Athlene"

Attention: If this kind of subject isn't important to you, please don't get involved. If it is or you are interested, please join in. I will offer my observations and current understandings. If you have some corrections, insights, or additional information, let's see it shared Please feel free to ask questions. Hopefully we can all expand our knowledge.

As long as you'll be posting 3 views or scale drawings to keep the thread relevant to this forum, I can't see where anybody should/would have a problem.

Could I suggest that you post the 3 views you have in the first post? Just to tidy things up a bit.

Please feel free to comment about the newsletter content.

I know the editor won't mind and encouraged any feedback at all when it was being published. He also knew it was not error free, on his part, and solicited corrections. I t was started as a vehicle to promote his own Mustang scale drawings, but became quite viable on its own.

Thanks for adding those 3-views. Don't recognize the middle one, but first and third are from Squadron Signal "In Action " series. Highly influenced (ripped off?) from MAP scale drawings by A.A.P. Lloyd.

This small 3-view is believed to be the ORIGINAL Mustang 3-view, penned by Edgar Schued. As such, this would be the one he prepared for presentation to British Purchasing Commision = http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchi...0-%200682.html

First made public in 1941 Aerodigest. Interesting to see it was published again 1942 Flight.

It is actually more NA-73X than production Mustang I, it never the less saw use in some manuals and, in slightly modified form, became representative of official P-51B specification.

Practically useless for modeling, however.

Technically, there are only two types of different canopy shapes that appeared on war time P-51D's. These are the " -2" and the "-6" types. These are not " the California" and/or " the Dallas types", but these terms are somewhat important to understanding the larger story.

The -2 canopy blister was formed in a mold to some fairly strict tollerances. They are consistently of same shape throughout its production. However its use was limited to a single production block. This block was the first production run of P-51D's, which started down the Inglewood California production line, January 1944. These Mustangs, P-51D-5-NA, began appearing in the Northern European Theater (England) in May, of the same year. P-51Bs (no longer being built) and P-51C's (still in production) were still being delivered. Nearly 800 -5-Na's were built. With th next production block ,P-51D-10-NA, again at Inglewood, a new canopy AND the Dorsal Fin Fillet were introduced. This new canopy was the first iteration of the -6.

The method of manufacture had changed with the -6. Instead of being formed in a mold, the -6 was "free blown" to quite a bit looser tolerences. These are actually given as +/- measurements in the parts drawings!. As P-51D production ramped up, there would be noticable variations, before Inglewood production canopies would settle down to what is largely considered the classic Mustang canopy.

If you look back at the 361st photos posted earlier, Lou IV is a P-51D-5-NA, while E2-S is a -10-NA. Both are fairly standard examples of their respective production types.

So far we have documented ( for this discussion) two different canopy profiles. Did you notice both are "California " types? Wonder why they changed?? The answer coming next,

E2-S is a -10-NA with the noted block differences of canopy shape and production fitted Dorsal Din Fillet.

Ferocious Franky is also a P-51D-5-NA and is identical to Lou IV.

In a surplus store in Cleveland, OH, more than 50 years ago, I saw a P-51 canopy, no frame. Didn't ask the price. I've often wondered where such parts are squirreled away.
