Bagging Replacement Opus Wings

Delayed Still: Sorry for the delay. Will start back in 2015. Have a new belt sander to help shape the wings.

Note: Work is being delayed on this wing build due to Little James - James and Rosarios new baby.

This will be a slow going thread on making wings for a couple of Opus V fuses. Summer of 2013 I bought a 2M Carbon Blade fuse, 2 Opus V fuses and a T Tail fuse with a missing nose.

The 2M Blade fuse was fitted to my busted up Blade wings and is currently flying again.

Jame D and I will be making wings for the OPi. We started by blocking out blue foam, creating templates and cutting the middle section.

Plan is to cut the outer wing panels then building the wings PSS like. Which means Balsa or Ply wing Sheeting, a 3/4 inch popular or bass wood LE and a 2 inch Aileron Stock TE. We then plan on bagging the wing with carbon and 2 layers of 4 Oz glass. Kevlar live hinges too.

Pretty nice Ray,

Looks like you gotta little ridge on the top of your Blue Foam core (Center Section?) Shouldn't effect anything though, seeing on where it is on the airfoil.

You decided to go with RG14 airfoil. Was that the original for the Opus?

I need one for my fuse,...the fourth Opus fuse in your purchase, but I want CF Bagged only, no balsa/ply skin.

Chip that line is when I moved the bow to the right to keep it centered. There is no ridge, luckily.

I dont know how the final wing will come out with the bagged balsa skin, once we do I'll know if the templates will be the right size for FG/Carbon only skins.

Video of the foam cutting

One vid uploaded showing the foam cutting.

There was a lot of setup to make sure the wire is pulled though the foam so the start and stop is the same on both sides of the foam block. Also this set of templates uses up too much foam but we wanted to get one core cut to make sure we're doing it right. This is the first blue foam wing cut so we were anxious.

Since then I've made a new set of templates so we can gut two wings from this thickness of foam.

Opus Middle Wing Top Cut (3 min 4 sec)

Video of the reveal.

Opus Center Section Reveal (0 min 34 sec)

Next step is to cut the wing tips.

I get formica from Lowes they have sample pieces 12X12 for 25 cents shipped.

Use one of the free airfoil programs and figure out the Airfoil and thickness then size it to the chord you want.

Make a couple copies and 3M77 them on the formica.

Then cut them out with a bandsaw/jigsaw/scrollsaw. Sand to final shape.

I'll take pictures of my templates.

Looking good Ray!

Looks like James' TE got a little thin on the center section. Maybe the wire was a bit too hot.

What chord widths did you use for your center and wing tips? Did you taper the wing tips both LE & TE?

OK I'll get photos later this week but we sheeted the bottom of James' wing and inlet a 3/8 X 3/8 Basswood spar with epoxy.
