InstaMorph - Moldable Plastic

Now you can make your own parts for your RC projects.

InstaMorph is a moldable plastic that is only limited by your imagination.

I'm an incurable modder. I like to customize just about everything. Recently I came across InstaMorph. InstaMorph is a biodegradable, non-toxic, lightweight polyester thermoplastic that is light weight and becomes moldable at a 60C / 140F. It solidifies at room temperature.

Here is how you use it:

  1. Get a pot of water up to 140 degrees.
  2. Pour in the desired amount of InstaMorph pellets.
  3. When the pellets go from white to clear they are ready to be taken out.
  4. Use a fork or tongs to remove your moldable plastic. I move the blob around to make sure I have all the plastic.
For my first project I wanted to make a stand for my pan-and-tilt camera. I wanted to create something the lower servo could sit tightly in that also had a base. This would be used to secure the pan-and-tilt camera to multiple applications with velcro.

I am a huge fan of InstaMorph now and am already using it to create parts for new projects. This is something you have to keep on your work bench!

Seems to be available from the usual suspects; Amazon and eBay.

It's also sold under the name Polymorph (and a few other I have forgotten). Some years ago I wrote about using it to make prop adaptors:

Been using it for years for so many different things.
Last thing I used it on was behind Deans plugs to make ridged extensions for a better grip.
This is something that every on here can use somewhere, super stuff

A canopy it something you could make. The trick is to make it look good. I like to flatten it out and cut with scissors to get nice straight lines. I think the best way to make a canopy would be to get it nice and thin and form it over an existing canopy. You can use a lighter to "weld" parts together. It does take some practice. The good news is you can always throw a formed piece back into hot water to reform it.

What it sticks to varies. I have found that CA seems to work well with it.
