Bd5

Well I was going to wait until I had finished my Husky that I'm in the middle of building before I started on this, but the lure of freshly laser cut balsa was too much to stand. I thought "I'll just glue a couple of pieces together". Before I knew it a couple of hours had passed and I had this to show for it. It's a complete re-design of a previous one that I had done, but with some improvements to make it a little more scale such as wing fillets and a full flying tail. Wingspan is 28in, 140 sq in, GWS S1 for power, and around 7-8 oz weight.

I think I want to be on the list for that plan (or short kit???).

I was just getting started in aviation (high school) when Jim Bede launched the BD5. High hopes but not much followthrough.

Now all I need to do is figure out how to power an IPS-sized BD5J

Thanks Guys, I'm glad you like it. Hopefully you'll be able to get some short kits from the laser cutter.

David, I've thought about the BD5J as well but just don't see any way to do it. Would be really cool though.

Dave,

It looks great, I want one...been after Mike for one already. I see another shaft drive in the drawing? Think it will balance with a 15-20 gram BL motor in the tail? The shaft drive would be just as easy to do with a cd-rom as with the s1, in any case...hmmm

Why not as a pusher-jet with a Hacker B20? It would probably be a lot more fun than a GWS-powered plane.

140 squares will make a hot little Speed 400 number!

The DB5 IS a prop pusher in it's standard configuration.

The DB5J has a Sermal (sp?) microturbo in the tail. A couple of them flew the airshow circuit in the '80s and early '90s.

And in one of the Bond (007) movies.

MetroGTi,

The plane in Octopussy was an "Acrostar":

http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/q-bran...php3?t=op&s=op

I don't know if this is related to the BD5. IIRC from a TV documentary, only two Acrostars were ever built.

EDIT:

OK, some more googling, looks like they (Acrostar & BD5-J) might be same thing:

http://tbssuperstation.com/JamesBond...sy-146,00.html

There is a bd5 site, did not find a Bond reference:
http://www.bd5.com/

Can anyone comment more definitively on which version of BD5 flew in the movie?

Regards,
Andre

Well, that looks to be pretty definitive

Thanks for the link, MetroGTi.
