Boeing 727 Engines 1 & 3 Question


I'm in the process of designing a 727 for GWS EDF 50s which will be finished in the new DHL yellow and red fuslage livery.
On every DHL 727 I've seen in this livery, the side mounted engines are not painted, but left their natural aluminum finish.
As I've seen other 727 side mounted engines partially painted, so my question is why not paint them yellow? Is it a heat dissipation issue? Anyone have a clue?
For me the unpainted engines stick out like a sore thumb in an otherwise pleasing livery.

I've tried contacting DHL, but my question has left them uninspired.

David,

Just guessing, but frequent change-out of the entire engine nacelles might have something to do with it.

Don't know about the paint issue but you're talking about #1 and #3. #2's the one in the middle.

I've considered FedEx, but Solite does not come in Orange. Thought of substituting Red, but then saw the new DHL livery which fits the Solite Palette. I've been begging Solarfilm for Orange and a lite Chrome Solite.

Appreciate the suggestion

HEY, HEY, we're talking about corporate colors here.

The livery I really wanted was American Airlines, but chrome Monokote is too heavy.

I think I might be getting some response from DHL on my question. Their "800" phone number yielded a sympathetic ear today ... "You wanta know whaaat?" she said. I'm hoping to get a phone call or an email. We'll see.

The reason not to paint is usually a question of economics.

No paint equals:
No labor for paint
No cost for paint
No weight for paint
Lighter weight equals lower fuel costs

The flying public doesn't really care what a freight dog looks like up close.

You'll notice that most composite panels that are adjacent to bare aluminum surfaces are painted silver to blend in.

Did DHL ever get back to you? Are they going to paint their engines for you?

What plans are you building from? Does the 727 have a fully cylindrical fuselage cross section or an '8' shaped section. I've been thinking of doing one in foam for the GWS fans too. I just bought 4 Draganfly 9 gram servos and a pair of GWS Pico std servos. The 9gm servos are small but the Pico's a tiny! A nice light airliner would be a beauty on a calm day.

Well all that's fine and makes sense. But it looks funny to me. I'd just like to know their reason. I'd like to see them yellow.

Hey Mike,

Are they going to paint their engines for me? Wouldn't that be a kick!

Haven't heard yet, but hoping. Will make one more call next week and if no response, will drop it.

727-100 will be along the same construction as my Learjet 23 thread posted in electric jets. It's a "close to" scale stick and film construction and looks fairly round.

Anyway the 777 is BIG! Got to walk around one in Barbados a couple of weeks ago.

With my current interest in twin GWS EDF-50s in the 12 to 14 oz. RTF weight, landing gears are not within the weight limits and wing mounted engines don't land well even on grass.

And yes, airliners.net is a great site!
