Build Log

Finwing Penguin FPV

Well this is going to be a bit of change in direction for me. I have been planning on flying my Skywalker X8 as my first fixed wing FPV platform but now that the airframe is all put together it's apparent to me that I will need to build a launcher for it. I still want to fly my X8 but I came to the conclusion that I wanted to start out with something a little more simple that would be easier to setup, and then move to the X8.

So I went out and pulled the trigger on a Finwing Penguin from RMRC. The box just arrived last night, so I'm still doing research and putting my notes together. I will update this post as the build continues. I am going to get started right away as I want this to be a fast build.

Mine is already built and I've been flying it for almost a year now. Love the way it flies even after two crashes and breaking it in half. I subscribed to this thread in case I decide to build another one. Looking forward to tracking your progress. Good luck

Thanks scottieusa! Just completed the maiden, flying LOS to test everything out before I put all my FPV gear in there. Had two successful flights, photos and videos coming very soon.

The Maiden Flight

I decided to fly the maiden flight LOS without putting my expensive FPV gear in the plane. So I just put a Spektrum receiver in the plane, copied the model parameters from my Sig Kadet over to the Penguin on my JR 11x, and flew it. Best to start simple and make sure she flies right before putting a complex OSD/Autopilot in.

Winds were out of the south at 5mph gusting to 20mph or so. The crosswinds at my test location made takeoffs and landings a bit challenging. I did two flights, the first was a hand launch with the canopy on, and the second was a ROG takeoff with the canopy removed. She needs a bit of rudder to make the turns even with the canopy off but flies really well. There is a lot of lift from that undercambered wing!

Everything went really well, the only issue we had was losing the video from the second flight where I made a much better landing. One the first flight a gust of wind hit right as I was about to flare knocking me off course. Fortunately I had an entire soccer field to land on.

Here's the video from the first flight.

This was the best flight I've had so far. This was a test flight to try out RTH on the RVOSD. After I got it working I tried ranging out a little bit with FrSky 2.4.

RVOSD5 Return To Home Test (11 min 37 sec)

After I made this flight I tried to fly out for 1 mile on the FrSky but I only made it 4500 feet or so before I lost the link. Sadly my DVR and keychain cam messed up so I don't have good video of that flight.

Next step is setting up EzUHF.

I have the EzUHF all setup on my Taranis now and the receiver installed on the Penguin. Made three flights on it yesterday, the third one I set my FPV distance record at 5400 feet.

FPV - 1 mile flight attempt (7 min 2 sec)

Thanks for posting this thread smoothvirus. This thread inspired me to pull the trigger on getting into FPV (RC for that matter) and my Penguin arrives tomorrow and I can't wait.

Now that you're flying it a bit, would you do anything differently?

My Penguin Arrived today!! I must say, my initial thoughts were to the size of the fuselage area. It's HUGE! Being 14, I still need the money for the FPV set, but this should be a good first step.

Would anyone know of a decent build thread or build video on this? The manual is very lacking in information. Thanks, nice videos!!

You can start with the thread here https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show....php?t=1684618 It's pretty huge and might be able to answer some of your questions. Or you can click on the various links that the OP posted in his original post here.

The manual is pretty disorganized but thankfully the build itself is pretty easy. I think if you read a couple of build threads you'll be fine.

One trick I learned from building my X8 is when you use the supplied glue (or UHU Por), once it is applied to one of the foam pieces, let it dry for 5 minutes until it is no longer sticky. Makes assembly a little bit easier.
