Geez, another guy raises the bar! Is that gear custom made? It doesn't look like anything commercially available to me. Can you tell us where you got the pilots? I'm using pilot heads and shoulders (busts) but I like the looks of those pilots. BTW, that looks a lot bigger than my crappy little 1/8 scale DC-3. What size is it? That's going to one beautiful airplane!

This DC-3 / C-47 is 1:8 scale and is nr.3 that I've draw and build at the same time.
This is custom made gear as I build it myself and is suppose to hold every screw like the the real thing.
The first one I build and draw was PBY-5A Catalina 1:8 Scale and second one was 1:4 scale Aeronca Chief 11AC which I additionally own the real size of.

Here you can see PBY Catalina

Thanks for the nice comments.

As you can see, I form the plane from paper. That is how the drawing is made at same time as the building it.

This is how the plane currently looks like, most of the wooden work is over. Now I am looking for best way to put aluminumclothing and size of aluminumpanels to get most realistic look.
I'll show picture of that soon.

If you want to see older or more picture here is a link to my album as I made this Building log really late.

Sturla... Great build, fantastic landing gear on both the DC 3 and the PBY
I too am building the PBY and had found your PBY build some time ago and I want to thank you for posting it; your build has been a great help w/ my build.

Mine being made is from a different of drawings and I opted to build just the PBY flying boat w/ out landing gear, but I did make the retractable floats.

Look here.

Good luck w the rest of the DC 3 build,

Hi Bruce, you are more than welcome to take a look at my PBY Catalina photo site, along with anyone else interested in the Catalina.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sturla/sets/

I'm using aluminum panels/plates 0.3 and 0.15mm thick. (that are used in newspaper presses who sometimes need to get rid of their old expired plates).
I use the thicker panels where I assume most of the wear and tear will occur from transporting and essambling, as you can touch them with the tip of your nails without marking them.

I use two different type of wheels for the blind rivets.

The plate will become straight again if you sand the backside with a fine sanding disc.

Polishing products

I attach the plates to the wings with a polyutherane filler/glue
