GoPro Hero3+ Black and Silver

More features in a flight-friendly case.

Smaller. Lighter. Better for FPV.

GoPro has just announced the newest Hero camera, and this one is looking quite well for those of us that like to haul them up into the Troposphere. The GoPro Hero3+ Black and Silver Editions have been put on a considerable diet to shed a few grams and take up a little less space on your already-cramped aerial platform. While both editions are smaller and lighter, it's the Black Edition that really performs.

According to GoPro, the Hero3+ Black has:

  • A camera body that's lighter and 20 percent smaller.
  • Battery life that's 30 percent longer.
  • Wi-Fi that's four times faster
  • An automatic low-light mode
  • A sharper lens with less distortion.
  • SuperView video mode for ultra wide-angle shots.
  • Better sound quality

I think the Superview mode is best left to flying over non-human made terrain,
because otherwise everything looks unnaturally squished vertically.
In 1080p S, the the live output it shows the full 4:3 view while storing the
video as 1080p, but if you try to fix it in post processing, you'll lose
information as you have to crop and stretch it vertically. If having a full frame live
out is desirable, then better to record at 1440p and then crop it to 1080p in post.
In fact, I wish they had just done that in the camera, instead of creating this weird
distorted mode.

Makes sense to me. Now that the H3+ is out, it is in their best interest to
get the bug ridden H3 off the market. I think the H3 had hardware issues
causing its instability. They tried to address it with various firmware updates
but ultimately could only do it with a new processor, and the H3+ was born.

Here's another comparison of normal versus SuperView modes
with bonus proximity flying and a surprise ending.

Do these 3+ solve some FPV-specific issues that bug me?
1) A way to water/shock proof the camera in case while having live FPV out? I want to protect the cam, but the options I've seen involve creative case drilling/sealant that makes getting at the SD card/files difficult.
2) High res photo stills every 0.5 seconds AND safe fpv live out?
3) works with RangVideo/Kristaps style live out whilst powering without GP lipo cables?

1. nothing has changed there..
2. dunno
3. What was your problem? The Rangevideo live out works with power in in the H3 as well.

Daemon - have you posted somewhere the various components in this FPV setup? I don't want to derail the thread (& apologies to the OP for this intrusion) but would really like to read about your setup. Just the usual details like frequency, Video Tx & Rx make & wattage, antennas, LRS, camera ... and any tricks you needed to get them all to play well together on such a compact vehicle.

Hero3/3+ live out using Rangevideo slot connector into
HK simple OSD into
FOX800 (600mW) 1.3Ghz video Tx
Racewood VRX + SAW filter mod
Rangelink UHF Tx and Rx with stock antennas.
I put the camera and video Tx at the front, and UHF Rx antenna at the back.
That's about it. Frame is about 12 inches square.

I see no screws, how do you replace the lens glass (on the casing) once it's scratched ?
Have to replace the whole casing ?
