Step 30

Take a breath and look at what you've done.

10-17-2014 Witches Hat Modification

I've attached three pictures that show what I've done. I noticed on the Wizard that he flew as if on rails where the Witch would hunt in yaw right at center. I attributed this to the hat catching air so I modified it so that the hat weathervanes. This cured the issue but at high speed the hat causes flutter. My next step will be to give the hat an airfoil shape instead of the flat plat hopefully solving the high speed flutter issue.

In the photos you can see that I imbedded a carbon tube in the base of the hat and epoxied a stiff wire in the leading edge of the hat. The hinge line (pivot line) is 90 degrees to the base of the hat. I then put a small wheel collar on the end of the wire to hold it on. Please leave a large gap between the base and top of the hat so that there is no binding . Hollow out the area where the wheel collar meets the brim of the hat. Make sure everything is free moving.

10-6-2015 On my third Witch build I did the hat top (with two red stripes) different then the prior two builds. I used 1/8 inch ply for the base and imbedded 3 earth magnets to easily attach the hat prior to flight and remove it afterwards. 3 additional magnets are in the brim. I used two DuBro hinges to allow the top to weathervane during flight. I used 1/4 x 1/2 inch balsa as a front post to support the hat top.

Step 31

1. Paint it.
2. Apply head graphics.
3. Perform a final balance check. The CG is 10.5 inches for Witch and 11.5 inches for the Wizard and is measured from the side/center body plate intersection at the front. Check your lateral CG.
4. Check your control setup. Rudder throw should be 3 inches and I use 40% expo. Elevator throw is 5 inches, and I use 20% expo. Elevator neutral trim should be set at 1 inch up.
5. Find someone to hand launch.

The launch should be done about 15 degrees nose up with a slight push. Watch out for the prop!!! We've found that holding the broom handle and the leg works best.

He/She can be very responsive to rudder commands. Make sure the CG is correct. If too far to the rear, you will lose turn capability.

Have a friend standing by for landing/recovery. He/She lands very slow but once on the ground will tip to the side.

At the field, this craft rests comfortably on its back between flights. Just note that you will have to remove the witch's hat top between flights.

Go haunt and scare the neighborhood. Happy Halloween !!!

This is a large project consuming 7 ea. Full 39"x27"x6mm sheets of Depron.
That is 14 ea. 1/2 sheets 13.5" x 39" x 6mm.

Just the Kinko printing cost for all the paper is going to be pricey.
I cant count high enough if you plan to print Tiled sheets on your personal printer.

Please consider my Cutting Service after you do the math.

Thanks ,

Otto.. the truth. I got no space to keep one if i ever build it. I did the skyman halfway and gave it to a friend to finish up.

Flying Nobita @ Puchong (1 min 35 sec)

Otto, your build are excellent! You're the man for flying man/superhero and now wizard and witches. Salute !

Great release Otto with Halloween around the corner.

At the start of summer I built the Surfer, I may have to build this one for Halloween this year.

The way I fly it would be Ron Weasley for when I crashed it.

Great creation Otto.
Are the files available in dxf form? I have a homemade CnC router I will use to cut the foam and ply with. I have a pdf to dxf converter but its not my favorite software .
I scratch built a superhero last year so I know much work these guys can be.
The Depron/ply/carbon are on there way....

Thanks for this great project. I hope to be posting pics of my progress soon.
