Taupo, New Zealand from a Penguin's perspective

Tape screeched along the top of a large brown box. The tips of my fingers nicked several female XT60 connectors soldered to some large blue blocks. My bag was lassoed onto my shoulders and my shoes crunched down onto gravel, which sounded like teeth meeting hokey pokey. One of my arms reached out for the black handle to my left and the gearstick lurched into reverse…

Several weeks ago my family and I drove up state highway one through the Manawatu and Wanganui districts in New Zealand, and through Tongariro National Park past Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro and onto Lake Taupo where this adventure begins and ends.

On this journey I brought the following items:

• Finwing Penguin V2 (fitted with all the stock Finwing Penguin electronics)

• Turnigy 9X transmitter and receiver set

• Five 2200mah 3 cell batteries

• Liquid Image Ego camera

On the first days of my holiday in Taupo due to some last minute building on the aircraft and some holiday activities the flying didn’t eventuate. Finally on the third day in Taupo I managed to do some flying with the Penguin and Liquid Image Ego camera at a farm to test out the system, and to see what the video recording was like from the inside the canopy (it was not good as there was to much reflection).

On the fourth day I went for a late afternoon flight, which makes up the beginning of the video in this article, and from that flight onwards I decided to not use the translucent canopy. On the last day in Taupo before the long trip home I went for a couple of flights down at the waterfront (that makes up the second part of this video). On the last flight this is where the adventure ends basically because I crashed my plane due to some interference with my radio from the camera.

Thanks for reading
